Evening all,

Being one of the lucky few to get a round in today (I know how all you boys feel across the pond) i answered a few questions of myself....
When we got to the club the comp was a 4BBB and seeing as we didn't have another pair out with us that men't we couldn't enter the comp.....

So we played for 2 euro each....A small wager just to keep the focus.....
I played this morning with the intention of swinging well within my boundries....Nice and smooth and without the usual tongue between the teeth knock the name off the ball...balls out power i usual am guilty of......

First drive....320mtr par 4 and im 80 mtrs from the centre of the green off the tee........240 off the bat....Not bad for winter and a lazy swing.....
Well i managed to keep the tempo going for the front 9 and turned 3 over par gross....Not so bad......

We were waiting then on the 10th tee and everything was backing up...So we decided to swing back onto the 1st and play the front 9 again, this time with irons only.....

Outcome.......5 over par gross on this run.....It answered 2 questions for me....
Q1. How can the ball travel further with less effort.
A1. Because your not loosing balance from swinging too hard and your hitting the middle of all your clubs.

Q2. What would you score with irons only.
A2. A lot better than you think.

Ok if the short game was a little better the run with the irons would have been better but a 5 over par for 9 holes aint all that bad.

All in all a happy camper and looking forward to next weekend

I had a game last week with a work mate, at his course
Frost in the ground
Hit 1 driver all day, at the 1st, and as I didnt feel comfortable or steady on the ground, I just hit a rescue club or iron off every other tee
Nice and smooth, not trying to 'kill it'
Result was a gross +5
Obviously getting good/funny bounces at times, but in play, fairways all round

I started playing again in August last year after a 3 year break.Home course is short but very tight, untill a couple of weeks ago i only had Irons and a 19deg hybrid in the bag, although i've put a 3 wood in now since my Scramble partners moaned at me.Would be interesting to see how i'd score on a longer course though, with no driver or fairway woods in the bag ?

might practice a round like this in the summer. hybrid and irons only. i dont use lower than a 5 iron so im going to use a sneaky hybrid.

Lowest iron i use Gary is a 4 iron....I have a 20 degree Ping i15 hybrid but i didnt count this as an iron so i was just hitting the 4 iron.....
A funny one was our par 5 6th......434 mtrs off the yellows and i hit 4 iron off the tee another 4 iron to about 140 mtrs and i hit a 6 iron in to a foot from the pin to tap in for a 4.....

I usually hit my driver here and i havent birdied that hole for a while...:)

I am guilty as charged for trying to kill the ball.
I usually start off steady(ish) then, as I warm up I hit the ball harder & harder (or try to)
The last time I played, it was minus 2 degrees & apart from being cold & stiff it was very slippery underfoot, so I couldn't hit the ball that hard, I was so much more accurate & distance didn't suffer to badly, apart from one ball that decided to split in half in mid-air.

I have just got to slow my swing down & not try to murder the ball, easier said than done in my case.

My last few practice rounds before the clocks changed at the end of summer I played irons only. As you say, you make out better than you would think.

Love my driver though!!!

i have a very flat swing. i started playing when i was only a young pup. took it up properly about 4 years ago now and didnt realise how flat i was till about two years ago. really hard to break that habbit. i dont think i could play with offset irons. ive hit a few offset drivers and it just looks so wrong looking down. hybrids will help me. ive ordered a 19*muzuno. cant wait for it to arrive. ive hit my brothers and its great. slight fade to it which will have a nice soft landing. will prob buy a 24*hybrid too.

a the top of the backswing i tend to lean forward slightly causing me to slice across the ball. i dont mind having this cut as im pretty accurate with the shorter irons. its just the further down go the more i tend to slice it.

Tried to practise today at the range. Too cold and I wasn't focussed on what I was tring to do. Ended up swinging too hard and fas with inevitable results. Hit a couple pf PW to finish the basket and probably because it was a shorter club swung within myself and nailed them perfectly. Try again tomorrow if it warms up a bit and see if we can get back to the way I hit it Tuesday.

I went through a period in the seventies when my woods and I agreed on trial separation, took up with a Ryder 1 iron from the tee and 3up to the green. Still managed to stay (just) in single figures. It improves your short game like nothing else. Still have a trusty Ping Zing 2 1iron in the bag for tight courses. Just don't try it off the fairway:mmm:

i have a wilson 1 iron that my brother gave to me. im trying to find a suitable victim to give it to. its bloomin useless!
