Irons for life...

Hard to justify that there is nothing better than miura though. Granted this is all subjective, but unless you hit a huge range of irons, you will never know if there is something else out there that is better for you.

It's only MY opinion that Miura are the best for ME.

If anyone thinks that ping, titleist, mizuno etc are the best for THEM then good luck to them.

This is not a thread for the Miura haters, it's a one for the clubs that you think you could have for LIFE. Me? I could happily live with my 501's for life.

Opinion is a reflection of experience.

I could easily say the Callaway x-18s are the best clubs I've ever hit. The statement is true but lurking beneath it is that fact I've hit these clubs, a Slazenger 7 iron about20 years ago that must have been 5 years old at the time and some knock off clubs claiming to be Callaway fusions.

Perhaps if I hit other irons my opinion might change but that makes it no less valid right now.

All that said I can't believe in a statement of irons for life - what about the grooves for a start? They'll wear and you'll get less grip and in time need to replace them (even if you sharpen them occasionally). And there is no consideration of club damage during swings etc, or storage.

But then they are not the irons you originally bought 'FOR LIFE' they are a new set of shaft fitted to some old heads. Bit like Triggers Brush in Only Fools.

Trigger. "Maintained it for 20 years. This old broom's had 17 new heads and 14 new handles in its time."
Sid. "How can it be the same brush trigger?"
*Shows photo of brush.*
Trigger. "Well there's a picture of it, what more proof do you need?"

Then the thread would have been called shafts for life.

Certainly not a Miura hater, I know next to nothing about them. I think there are probably about a dozen sets of irons for every golfer out there, technology has probably piqued and a lot of clubs I have used in the recent past aren't too dissimilar. That said, if I knew there was a set of irons out there that would help me more, cash permitting, I would jump for them. I don't see irons for life working for me.

im currently thinking about the x forged myself had a go on the range last night, apart from standard loft and lie being a tad hard to adjust to they were lovely feeling clubs

i think i might be a callaway man for life, tm irons dont appeal to me, and the others ive tried have never wowed me like callaways

this is my opinion so dont have a hernia

It's a forum, it's a place for discussion. Just because we don't agree and bow down to the almighty Miura doesn't make us haters. I actually quite like Miura products and think that they are well made.

The point I was challenging was the one where you do NOT say what you are saying above about them being the best for you. You state that they are the pinnacle of the craft of club making and that there is nothing finer. You do not caveat that with "for you".

Yes, you have spent a wedge and are probably proud of them, more power to your elbow, but will they be the greatest enough to help you beat a 1 or 2 handicapper out there where it counts? Will they help you perform any better than my MP53's will help me?

I hired a set of x22 irons on holiday last year, beautiful clubs!

I have a set of nike vr split cavity irons. Not for every one and I'm still growing into them but I do really like them, it's my choice to play with them.

What I said to Dean before he bought them was as long as he liked them, who cares what anyone else thinks. Sure his statement is bold but its his opinion which he is entitled to. Like me, surely there are irons which are better suited to our ability but as long as we like (or in deans case, worship) our irons then all is good.

The one thing I don't agree with is clubs for life. Miuras are soft and I don't think they will stand up to life as well as a cast iron but certainly there is no need to change until they are just not up to the job any more.

Either way, dean is happy with his purchase and he is asking a question about your kit, not criticise his, AGAIN

Unless/until going down the 'fully fitted' route, save the money and keep the X-Forgeds - they are very good!

As per my earlier post:

"Will certainly be exploring the club builder route when I do get new ones (and failing that will go to a proper independent fitter)"

I love the xforgeds to bits but some of the faces are getting very worn now and they also are ready for another regrip, so thought Id see if i could find something better. Last time i did this a couple of years ago I ended up just getting them regripped!

if you like the x-forged, give G1bbo a shout. I'm sure he has a spare set after his pre xmas eBay spree

I'm not criticising his kit actually. His kit is probably very lovely. It's the they are the best thing ever sweeping statement that I was QUESTIONING, this is a facet of forums too, you can challenge opinion. My question was simply, what comparative basis was the opinion formed. And in lieu of an answer, I still am interested.
I will answer the question, I don't know what my irons for life would be, simply because, in 26 years of playing, I haven't found them and probably won't get the opportunity to try enough variations to actually say these are the best I will have these for life...

Any time anyone questions Miura it's deemed as criticising the owner... why is that?

Kev, I remember having a good look at yours on the 16th at Sharpley, they are seriously good looking clubs.

It's all about what you like (or love), even if someone said their dunlops are the best clubs ever, it's THEIR opinion, which I fully respect.

The best thing ever is only MY opinion. Which is why I asked what others think are their best clubs for ever as in clubs for life.

I could try mizunos tomorrow but because of how I feel about my irons, I won't. If I'm missing out, then so be it, I'm happy.

And I hope they serve you well when you have been playing the game for 20+ years and you have still resisted the temptation when you reach that inevitable handicap impasse.

Can't see me changing my AP2s for some time. Why? because they work for me and I love the look and feel of them. "for life" is probably a bit extreme though. My scotty putter on the other hand may well be with me for life, It's a wand :D

My point exactly. I'm glad you love them mate, and you done the right thing spending all of the time with Nicky picking the right ones. I don't think everyone realises that you did spend the time trying different irons and shafts out with Nicky, a trained club maker

Couldn't have said it better myself.

IMHO, my Miura CB501's are the pinnacle of golfing irons, I believe there are no better. These are my irons for life.

The reason being....I love the look, the feel, the flight, the absolute pleasure I get off hitting these things.

What would be your irons for life? And the reason behind choosing them?

these the ones ??

501-cb-6.jpg

they are cracking looking clubs, I'd be too scared to hit them incase I got a massive stone chip in one of them :D

I don't think i'd ever keep a set of irons more than 3-4 years, I get itchy fingers and fancy a change. I will at one stage buy a set of players blades mp68's or 69's just to see how I get on !! I'd have to keep some big ass cavities as a back up tho
