Hi Guys,

I've had a bit of success lately and managed to get my handicap down to 14. To reward myself I've decided to invest in a new set of Irons! I'm not even sure if I really need to upgrade! I had a go on the range this afternoon with a Titleist AP2 7 iron which I seemed to hit straighter and further than my present 7 iron (Mizuno MX950). My concern is that the Titleist may be a little bit beyond me as I've heard and read that they are suited more for single figure handicappers. The thing is they look fabulous and I'm easily swayed by new shiny Golf clubs!
I was wondering what your thoughts are and if anyone has any suggestions on the clubs I should be looking at.

Thanks for your thoughts in advance :

Taylormade cb irons, callaway xhot 2 pro or non pro,are the 2 best for me i tried. Still using my x14 till they pop down in price a bit,yes tight git I know.both have that bit of help for off centre hits and loved the flight on both.

Don't believe everything you hear about Titleist only making better player irons, the Ap range is probably aimed at players needing a bit of forgiveness, and if you fancy the AP2 I've an ex demo set of 712's is maybe sell

Try as many different sets as you can to start with and whittle the list down a bit. Once you get down to two or three, if it was me, and this is my own way of doing it, is to go to a pro or range with a launch monitor and test the choices against your own clubs and see if they really are going to make a difference.

As for Titleist, they have traded on being better player clubs for years but their AP range is a small cavity back and will give some forgiveness so I wouldn't be put off by the marketing spiel

The AP2s are brilliant. I have two sets of irons, MX900 and Callaway X18s.

I wouldn't trade either of these for anything, not even if I could get the APs for £300 or something.

The X18s were an experiment a good few years ago, when I simply went out and bought the most forgiving club according to Ralph Maltby's MPF rating.

They are fantastic, if you can get past the looks. I don't use the 9i or PW though, those are the MX900s.

(75 today with those ancient shovels....)

A good shout would be ping i20's/i25's. Great lookinh clubs but with that bit of forgiveness. When i chose the i20's at the fitting it came down to them with the mizuno 825 pro's and the xhot pro's but just couldnt miss with the i20's and they have helped my handicap come down!

It all depends how well and consistently you hit the ball, your handicap is no reflection on that. If you hit the ball solidly you can get away with a less forgiving club but if not, have a look at something with a big helping cavity.

As already stated, try out loads of different ones to see what works best for you.

I am constantly trying the latest clubs just for fun as I am very happy with mine, similar handicap to the OP.

I tried the G30's this week, for me they were too big and felt really really heavy. Nice clubs none the less and would be a decent choice if you like a heavy iron. Had a hit with the new cobra's they were very nice, i25 again very very nice but...For me, if i were buying some irons today, I would buy the new TM MC's, nice better player look with a thin top line, cavity backed for forgiveness, look great, feel great. expensive though...

Rocketbladez tour was a good shout, not a million miles from the TM MC and can be had for sub £300!

I agree. Last summer I was struggling badly and even X18s didn't help me much.
