Perhaps by trying to hard you are really attempting to nail it into submission which is another no no as you lose all rytham and tempo. Work out your iron distances on the range or with you pro and then just trust the club and let it do the work for you and swing smoothly.

Best tip I've had for aiming was to line up the club face with the target, then line your feet up to the club. Science behind it is that if you're pointing your feet at the target the club face will be pointing to the right (assuming you're right handed)
This could also be used with the spot aim technique which I'm going to give a go next time I'm out on the course.
