I tend to agree with therod. I haven't yet heard a coherent argument against equal marriage that wasn't based on prejudice, bigotry or superstition.

To anyone who doesn't believe in same sex marriage the solution is clear, don't marry someone of the same sex.

Meanwhile my fiancée and I are looking forward to our own wedding, something that even this time last year we weren't able to do.

I'd excuse quite a few simply on the grounds of 'ignorance' (the lack of knowledge meaning). But certainly those that vehemently oppose(d) it were/are as you posted!

All the best for your Wedding!

Here's your platform mate. Explain why you're against gay marriage:thup:

I'm genuinely interested, make me understand.
were did i say i was !!!! i was responding to a phrase in LP post stating if your beliefs didnt agree with others beliefs, you were in the wrong ,im taking that its ok for the gay community to say their beliefs are ok but anyone else's makes them homophobic or a bigot, sorry you cant have it all ways.

Actually a few of those not in the gay community agree with their views as well. Well apart from their awful taste in music. I mean Gloria Gaynor, come on.....

You didn't, but the it was implied.

It's not a gay or straight thing it's a person thing.

Hypothetically, if you object to equality it makes you a bigot. That's because there are no rational objections.

isnt everyone entitled to their own opinion, why should someone's opinion be used as a tool to berate and cause them hurt by bullying, why should 38% of voters yesterday be branded homophobic and bigots for having an opinion that some disagree with.

This is the issue. Rather than spelling out why they have the objection, 'they' hide behind their right to hold the opinion. 'They' can't or won't expand as to why. In the absence of explanation, bigotry is the only conclusion left.

Not all opinions are valid, some are ridiculous in their inability to rationalise. Some are also illegal, if not to hold, but to vocalise and act upon.

I think it's a sad state of affairs that people have to vote to give gay marriage legitimacy. If people wish to marry crack on.
However I know that people like to have a say etc, I wonder if other places will have a vote?
If people disagree with gay marriages then don't go to one if you ever get an invite!

Not into the labelling of people , this was done in the right way and the majority have voted & the changes will be made

What you have to take into consideration here is that a lot of the older generation "possibly" voted no , a lot of extremely religious people will be led by their beliefs & will have voted no .. They didn't do this out of badness , bigotry or nastiness , they did this out of their belief of what is right , if you believe in something come hell or high water you have to stand by that ,
To berate any1 for sticking to their beliefs = ??

Maybe some don't understand Irish culture , esp that of the older generation , for years it "possibly" held the country back in many ways , but ya know what maybe it kept Ireland a nice place to live , a lot of people wana be Irish still seemingly

Rod I cant argue in much you say , I think what happened was a good thing , I have gay friends & relations & now they have the equality to do what they wish if they wish , but id safely safe most of the yes voters realise why the no voters , voted no . they might not agree with it but the most wouldn't class the NO voters as bigots , selfish , old fashioned , codgers , possibly , bigot ? no

I spoke to a good few people regarding this on both sides , & I understand why they voted they way they did and I respect it ..

I don't think other countries would have a referendum. It's probably smart by the Irish government. By giving the decision to the people it negates the objection of the church.

It wasn't a 'smart' move, it was a constitutional necessity. They can only change the constitution by referendum (probably not a bad thing tbf).

This strikes at the entire concept of freedom of opinion!

In (my concept of) a Democracy, everyone is entitled to have an opinion. This is enshrined in the EConvHR (Article 10)! While it may not match mine and I may argue against it - or write it off in some way - the restriction of what opinions can be held is clearly, to me, a breach of human rights!

Your 'bigotry is the only conclusion' statement is wrong - in my opinion!

Some people have objections that are personal and as such they prefer not to discuss them openly. This does not make them a bigot. They may also believe that their opinions would cause offence to others so prefer not to cause that offence, this is also not bigoted.

To be a Bigot you need to be intolerant of those that differ. You seem to be the one who is showing intolerance to others opinions.

Bigot:

"One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ."

I'll ignore foxy, because he's an irrelevance. I've asked for the other side, none has been offered. To not share your beliefs based on the above is such a cop out. Lack of explanation leads to the only logical conclusion.

I'm kind of sympathetic, the modern world is a big scary place. It's much better to preach division and inequality than embrace understanding. :o

Who exactly is preaching division here? Please take a detached look at what has been posted and you may see that you have been the one that has been intolerant.

I have not made any suggestion of whether I personally have issues with Gay Marriage and have only made a case for people who may not be in favour and are entitled to their opinion as long as they are not 'preaching it' as you suggest.

Why do you have a need to understand peoples thoughts if they wish to keep them private. Why does this cause you such offence ?
