In Ireland, we have a lot of club-v-club golf at various levels. It ranges from the elite Senior Cup, where each club is represented by it's best players, competing off scratch in 5 singles matches... to fourball and foursomes competitions for 18+ h'cap players, and everything in between! It's all knock-out cup format, so you may get one match, or go on a run!

It's great to sharpen your game that extra little bit, and pull on the club colours. But it doesn't seem to be as common in the UK.

What do you guys think?

I think that most clubs in the UK are represented in local leagues and this applies to scrath and higher handicap golfers. Due to restrictions in the diary it can be difficult to find free days at the weekend or evenings and close the course for a few hours to accomodate such a set up. I loved playing in inter club matches though.

We have divisional inter club matches with other local clubs. I play in the foxes, 10 to 19 handicap bracket, and we play 4BBB. It is a good deal. £17 and a 3 course meal to play a different track. There are also Tigers 0 to 9 h/cap matches, scratch team matches, old gits matches, etc. Even the women have them.

I expect you've turned out for the old gits too though Murph haven't you?

Hi,
Its very big here in Ireland and you get a free pratice round the comp and a meal afterwards so it can get expensive if the club go on a run in a couple of comps. Having played on a few teams i'd say it is the biggest pressure any of us will face at the level we play but is very enjoyable.

Dont know why you have the impression that inter-club matches are not that common in the uk.

My experience is that they form a very important part of club golf in the majority of clubs throughout the uk.

I'd agree. We have scratch, handicap and seniors leagues covering the fylde area. Preston and Blackburn have the same and as far as I know most of the North West are very similar.

Through the summer we have Scratch, 8-15 and Rabbits leagues played home and away with up to 4 divisions. Great way to play different courses for no cost.
For the 8-15 league, matches consist of 4 singles matches with players from each team representing different handicap brackets, i.e. 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15.
Is a nice addition to your golf season - providing you win your matches when you get in the team - i only played 2 games in the end :(

My club has a thriving team ethos and enters everything from national events to local scratch leagues. Whilst some teams are based on ability (handicap), all sections (juniors, ladies, seniors and regular members) all have the chance to play in a number of matches which are competitve but also played in a friendly atmosphere. I love taking part, playing different courses, getting a good day out (normally much cheaper than a regular green fee with food chucked in) and having a laugh

I agree. If I had the time and energy (plus a decent game all year round) I could play endless inter-club matches.
