Insert vs milled face putters

If Id have known 3 mths ago I couldve offered 4 or 5 to try but have cleared the decks completely. there again give me a few weeks lol

:D just cleared my last putter and hybrid as well - just an old R11 hanging around

Can grab one to borrow from the pro. Just need a heavy one

Lead tape ? Not heard of doing that :mmm:

Old school, thats how things were altered in days gone by, now you have weight ports etc. Go back 20 years ago probably all the wedges, the putter and even maybe the rest of my bag had lead tape attached. Basically one strip changes the swingweight one point. Was probably the 90s version of buying a new shiny adding a strip of lead tape :)

Alternatively to the OP you could try the Odyssey Metal X range, they're an insert putter yes, but I find that from my own experience thar they definitely give off a firmer feel than the regular insert faces. What's your current putter?

It's a Odyssey Marksman backstryke.
It's great from about 12 feet, but it's the long putts I am struggling with, I either leave it short or if I try to hit it harder I loose my distance control & line.
It feels very soft off the face.

Ah right - the drawbacks of only playing golf for 5 years :D

I'm guessing tape isn't illegal ? Well until they see someone using it winning a major :D

Perfectly legal, at least it used to be, pretty sure it still is, obviously you cant change it mid round. If you ever watched the likes of Faldo, Lyle etc you'd have seen some on the back of their clubs at times

Do TM do it in white :D

Ollie's clubs are covered in the stuff.

Mickelson has got a good bit of lead tape on his putter. Because it's only a small blade, he says it gives him more weight on his putts. And it's worked pretty well for him!

It'd be worth it to at least try the Metal X range. Can't hurt to try

I don't like insert putters. As plain and simple as that.

I never seem to get a consistent roll off them. When I had a TM Spider Vicino (Cracking putter BTW) The ball would either come off the face at it's 'usual rate' or would launch off the face and run much further than anticipated.

Sometines to contact felt firm, others soft. Too inconsistent.

Milled face feels the same everytime I strike it, hence my liking for them.

Find an insert a nightmare on all but the fastest greens, great for the guys on tour who play on quick greens but dont work for me on UK greens, tend to feel springy, so distance control becomes very difficult, personally will only buy milled or aluminum faces nowadays

I tend to agree. I had a number of insert putters and always struggled with distance control and the feel off the face. Long puts on slow greens were always a nightmare. Just didnt get on with them and in most pro shops and brand all the y do is insert putters.

Had a go with a scotty at Tain one Saturday and it was so much easier to control and the feel was better. Bought one as soon as i got back to the proshop.

I steer well clear now of insert putters.

Thats the crux for me, my old putter had an insert and i liked it, until i tried a milled face. distance variations from the insert were huge at times, slightly off sweet spot very short, or get one bang on and it flies!
