Hello guys,

we are booking a golf trip for 2020 at England's Golf Coast next May and the itinerary currently is:
- Formby
- Hillside
- Royal Lytham (sleep in dormy rooms)

What do you think? any recommendations on where to sleep and eat? good pubs? I've been to Blackpool during the 2012 Open and that place is crazy! :D
Thanks for all the tips I will receive!

In the same class as the first two. Arguably better than Hoylake. Much like some will say Hillside is better than Birkdale.
In the same class are two others to consider. Southport & Ainsdale and one I really like, St Annes Old Links.

From the Fylde to the Wirral there too many to choose from.

You need to go for six days, so you can add Southport and Ainsdale, Birkdale and West Lancs. Perhaps add more days so you can add Hoylake and Wallasey and ......:)

This could be a great option for you and at a good saving, if you play very well you also play Birkdale:-

https://www.southportcoastchampionship.co.uk/courses

Sand A - held the Ryder cup twice

Hesketh has 12 very good holes.

West Lancs is tough, but good.

Hillside is great.

Birkdale is brilliant, open venue and ryder cup also.

Stay in Liverpool, tonnes to do, best night out in the UK, and lots of cultural stuff, if your into that also.

Only 20-30 minutes drive to most of the courses also.

Book quickly, though.

Personally I enjoyed playing Royal Lytham & St Annes more than Royal Birkdale. But neither will disappoint, both excellent golf courses.(y)

However if you want the more impressive scenery/duneland and clubhouse(in my eyes) then you should pick Royal Birkdale over Royal Lytham.

Played West Lancs, didn't fall in love with the place.

Never played the other courses(Hillside, Formby, Wallasey or Southport & Ainsdale)

Hope the trip goes well.

You have picked three great courses. As others have mentioned, Southport and Ainsdale, Birkdale would be great to add to the list.

Personally, i'd stay Lytham and eat around their too. Formby is fairly quiet and Southport a bit hit an miss. Lytham is a favourite town of mine. You can actually stay in one of (my favourite) pubs , The Queens. the food their is great also. Then there is "The Taps", "The Deacon" which are great also. Lots of restaurants to choose from as well. if you wanted to play courses of a less expensive nature than those you mention, add St Annes Old Links and Fairhaven to your list also.

Used to go out till all hours in Southport... but that was 25 years ago!

If I was going there and didn't fancy much driving, you could do Birkdale, Hillside and S&A and be happy, although I'd swap last one for Formby if going a little further... We had a few trips with Hoylake, Birkdale and Lytham on consecutive days......there are worse ways of spending a week!

PS. Wallasey is best links on the Wirrel.

Birkdale must be tremendous.

As much as I don't "enjoy" Lytham it is undoubtedly a tremendous test of golf. Holes are fantastic and it's a great golf course, just don't like the location in amongst the houses, detracts hugely from a great golf experience for me.

Birkdale is on my "must play list" just don't know when I'll get round to it.

Its what detracts away from Lytham to me, also compared to Birkdale.

At Lytham you can look across a few fairways also as well as at the surrounding houses, whereas at Birkdale they tend to be in semi-isolated valleys and apart from on the 1st tee, and by the 5th green, not a house in site, so gives you the feeling of being away from it all. I also think that the holes are better at Birkdale, whereas at Lytham the first few are slightly samey.

How many are coming and what are the handicaps? You want to have an enjoyable time and the courses should reflect this with the level of difficulty.

If you have booked Lytham and The Dormy House you may consider st Anne’s Old Links (Open Final Qualifying this year) and Fairhaven. The latter is not as good as Formby and Hillside but is very good and the 3 mentioned are close together for travelling.

Also it will cut down the travelling time.

Played Wallasey two weeks ago and it was fantastic.
But it’s on the other side of the river Mersey and a good way from Southport.
Birkdale for me is the best you can get around here, the approaches and whole course is like a billiard table.
Hillside is no two fabulous course
Formby is three wonderful test of your golf.

These are close together and you could stay at Formby Hall golf hotel.
You could have a night out in Liverpool by getting the train in .
Enjoy.

It is (y)

Probably the best course I've played tbh, only played it once but will be back at some point.

Lytham is a tough, great golf course but isn't a very pretty place to wander round by any stretch.
