In the zone!

Wow, what a great response to my question! Thankyou all for replying.

What clearly stands out from all replies is, there seems to be no secret to being in the zone :) It's also interesting to note that most of the good advice and tips can only really be practiced whilst out on the course playing the game, and not having to practice at the range.

So let's all hope that we will be shaving a good few shots off our forthcoming rounds. :D

I think the key lesson from this for we high-handicappers (at least for me) is to learn to manage expectation and so avoid frustration.

You would think that by now I'd be old enough (and ugly enough) to realise that just because I hit a good 6-i on one hole I'm not going to hit a good 6-i on every hole.

Still maybe that's why the human race is till here when bigger and fiercer creatures aren't. We live in expectation, they were stuck in reality.

Huh...this conversation is going completely opposite to what I where I would have thought where it would end up. :p

After a series of bad rounds and a woeful mental game (or so i thought until now!) last weekend I decided to go back to my old ways and really focus on scoring well. Before I switched I always chose a random target, and thought nothing else, and I mean nothing else! If i hit a good shot a merely just shrugged my shoulders and if I hit a bad shot I would practically go into a rage of fury!!! I forget the shots pretty quickly though. Last weekend I really focused on my target and kept that in my head during my swing, but I thought nothing else. I would turn on when I approach the ball and I would turn off when the shot was done. The change...I would smile when i hit a good shot and I would laugh when I hit a bad shot! :D Well...i forget the bad shot very quickly this time!
The result: a nett 34 for nine holes on a saturday and a nett 32 for nine holes on sunday. I'm definitely going to do the same thing this weekend! :D

I don't think the zone is a place only inhabited by better players, it;s just their results are better when they are there.

Also how long can you stay there ?

As far as I'm concerned it's that perfect place where my mind and body know exactly what they are doing without bothering me about it all. I can just wander around having a good time.

I doubt I've ever been lucky enough to be there for a whole round, but just for a few holes at a time.

For me it's when I look back at my round, and I can see it as if from the veiwpoint of another person. Rather than me playing the shots, it's as though I'm watching myself.

Never managed to get there out of choice, I don't think it's something that can be forced, just enjoyed. :)

What it all comes down to is a swing that you can trust on the course you cannot and do not have time to think about your swing whilst swinging.

To me this is the essence of being in the Zone, getting in a mind set where you relax and all you are thinking about is where the ball is going, how you do this is the tough bit. For me this is why practice and pre shot routines are so important and I also find that a regular coach that you trust can help you have confidence in your swing.
