Looking for a bit of info if anyone can help, are Macs better than a normal desktop. And do Apple do an office software or is it Microsoft.

Thanks for any input as i'm looking at buying the new iMac

The brand new iMac version is available today!

Firstly, Apple do their own office software: the package is called iWork, consisting of Pages (docs), Keynote (presentations) and Numbers (spreadsheets).

You can also get MS Office for iOS too, in Home & Student editions as well as Home & Business. Note that Home & Student doesn't come with Outlook and is a bit cheaper.

What is better? I prefer to use Macs are they are more 'friendly' to use, but that's just an opinion. Bit like comparing Vega with TaylorMade ;) You will pay more though for Apple.

Steve, macs are either great desktop publishing/imagery tools or fashion statements.

If you only need the internet, office etc windows 7 (and possibly later on, 8) on a decent little pc or laptop will do fantastically.
For the money you would pay for a mac, you could buy a pc with twice the spec.

Im currently using a Dell Laptop, and it is, without doubt, the largest pile of stinking dog bowel contents in the world. It worked well for 365 days, then decided that the wire from the motherboard to the screen needed crimping every time the lid was opened. It loses the date/ time every time the thing is powered down. The battery life is catastrophic (comparable to an Iphone), and my old apple rabbit booted up quicker...... Rant over..

IMac's are very pretty though.. I might have to have a look at those before I take a snipers rifle to the top of the nearest clocktower.....

Get an hp probook 4540 or 4740s and lump in a 256gb crucial m4 ssd. Less than 700 all in and would out run, outlast and looks fantastic.
I bought myself a 4740s and it is excellent value. Battery is pretty good and has a brushed alu case. Def a keeper, last laptop was a dell vostro 1720 loaded with a great spec. Kept having unrelated issues and eventually gave up the ghost at 3 years of age.
Dell still make decent desktops but their laptops are dismal this past couple of years.

Both my kids had Dell laptops what a bag of spanners they were, they kept falling apart, they got HP ones now and much better quality, oldest ones angling for an IPad tho.

Imac does look good tho

am looking at macbooks myself at the mo, pc takes up too much space, kids always want it for homework or playing the sims (my daughter) and I hate using the ipad as prefer a proper keyboard. Might go for it and relocate pc for kids use

does Mac do flash btw (I know ipad doesnt)

Just a bit tentative about the switch from windows to Mac OS... decisions, decisions

Christ I thought you were going to ask aboot hair removal Steve!

Yes it does. I made the switch and never looked back. Yes Apple products are more expensive and yes a lot of Apple users are complete knobwits, but I've not had ONE problem with my Macbook in 7 years and the only upgrade it's had is a RAM upgrade (from 1 to 2MB).

I've not once thought "oh crap, I can't do this on my Macbook" and it's so much nicer to use IMHO.

Having said that, I've just had my work PC upgraded to Windows 7 and it''s a great improvement, but I still prefer my Mac for it's bulletproofness.

I went Mac about 7 years ago and have never considered going back. Windows 7 is a decent improvement but its still Windows.

In terms of Office software, some Microsoft types say that Office for Mac is a better product than the Windows version. The Apple equivalent, iWork, is very good and will open Office documents and save iWork documents in an Office format.

Unless you work with very esoteric software you should not have problems using a Mac instead. And the Blue Screen of Death will become a memory of times past.

Macbook Pro user here for the last 3 years and I will never purchase another windows machine.

Even if you did run the odd non mac app, then you can always duel boot using boot camp.

I was in the software business for 25 years and used Microsoft all throughout. I have been using a MacBook for the last two years and it is the Dogs. Boots up fast, no system errors, better security, easier operating system.

Don't consider anything else.

I guess for me its the transition + the cost. As an ex IT engineer (mostly hardware troubleshooting/repair) I used to build pc's daily and do like the upgradability especially when I was into gaming. The 3x the price difference for a mac is the only stumbling block for me mentally. Might wait til the January sales and see if any bargains can be had ;)

I was in John Lewis a few months ago when they had an Apple rep there and I got talking to him even though I wasnt looking at changing my 1 year old HP laptop. He told me that the difference between Macs and PCs is how long they last, basically he explained although the initial cost was higher, the expected lifetime of the machine is at least three times longer with a Mac. The virus protection built into the Mac is apparently outstanding and the software is generally more user friendly, especially to the uninitiated user. Personally I would love a iMac but the initial cost is just too much for me to justify at the moment. One thing I will say, is that HP make a cracking laptop, and I love mine. Next time its time to change, I could be persuaded to change to Apple.

We moved to the mac a couple of years ago as fed up with slowness and viruses etc. we've never looked back but yes expensive in comparison to a dell etc.
