• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

If you could live out your days anywhere...

In the UK it would have to be Lamlash on Arran.
World wise..... N Island NZ... Hawke Bay area though the Pacific Islands are arguably the most perfect place on earth..... until recently

I’m already living that dream, though not in our first choice country. After speaking to expats in our first choice country we decided that as much as we loved it, it perhaps wasn’t the best place.

At the time of looking at our second choice country it was considering a levy on bank accounts holding above £50k. And so we moved onto our 3rd choice. There wasn’t much between second and third, so not really a loss choosing where we are now.

After much research we chose southeast Spain. A good tailwind, Almeria to Gatwick is 2 hours. Door to door to the eldest daughter’s in London is less than 5 hours. Warm winters, I bowled in shorts and t-shirt this afternoon. August is a bit steamy, but that’s what the jacuzzi is for. And its cheap as chips too.

Mind if I ask what the first and second choices were Bri?

San Diego or just north up the coast a bit, please.
Pretty sure this got voted the best place to ‘live’ (can’t recall how many years ago)…every winter in the UK I say I’d love to live abroad as I’d love 365 days golf in short sleeves but unrealistic with 2 kids under 10 at the minute!

First choice was Sicily. It’s one of the safest places to visit but although we thought a lot of the Mafia media hype was just that it’s very much alive, even down to the pool guy and the waitresses in the hotel had to pay insurance. We got talking to the hotel owner, an expat, who’d had the land 5 years before building started. It started almost immediately he paid his insurance. If anyone is foolish enough to steal from a tourist, it would be waiting for them at the hotel reception the next morning, and the thief would have been dealt with. Beautiful place with beautiful, friendly people but…

Portugal was our second choice but as I said, there was talk of a bank levy and, bizarrely, a coup. Neither have happened, and Portugal has some great tax incentives for expats at present.

Either of those would do me. Hawke's Bay in NZ is definitely a candidate.
Tahiti sounds good (listen below).

Where I am now.
I don't go in for wishing this or regretting that. The path I have chosen has resulted in lovely wife, 2 glorious daughters and a new grandchild. I am happy with my lot and where I am. I don't need to be dreaming about this or that place. My family is here and (generally) healthy. Who could wish for more.

South of France, Port Grimaud. Beautiful part of France, so much to see around that whole coast from St Tropez to Nice. You need a bit of money to live the life there but I suspect you do in all of the suggestions so far.
