Saranac Lake in New York State. One of the most beautiful and peaceful places I have ever been. The village (what we would think of as a small town really) is very much "small town America" but the three Saranac Lakes themselves are perfection.

Anywhere that gets me living closer to my children. They both live over 400 miles away, and I'd love to see them on a regular basis. No grandchildren yet, but that will be the next heartstring plucker.

You are so lucky at around 400 miles. we have 3 ’kids’ and 7 grandchildren living in Madrid, easy trip , Sydney and Nelson New Zealand. We have been down under around 12 times although unlikely we will go again

I loved Munich when I worked there, Baden Wurttemberg and the Black Forest area in Germany were also somewhere I felt I could live.

As a West country man Ive lived a fair part of my life near the coast and miss it now, I think my spiritual home is at Mousehole but it's too far away from my family and grandchildren now. In saying that my Son and three of my Grandsons live near Chicago.

I've had enough time on a tropical island to know I don't want to be here through to the end, so for me it'd be somewhere in the Scottish Borders (Hawick/Jedburgh area)

In the UK, would be happy up in the Highlands, although not keen on the winters. Would ideally like somewhere that is warm and sunny for 365 days a year, near the sea with a nice little house within 5 minutes of a decent golf course. I think Portugal would be a good option, but mrs Wedge wants a Japanese or English speaking country, she doesn't want to learn a third language. Japan would be good, but I'd have to sacrifice frequent golf. Looking at what's happened to my pension fund over the last two weeks, I'm probably looking at moving to a wheelie bin in a dark alley in the back end of nowhere.

For me, a lot of this is down to weather and surroundings. I chose San Diego because I have been there 10 or 12 times, mostly on business but also on holiday. Like most places in America, life is much nicer with some money, but the lifestyle is great with year round good weather, enough variation in the weather to give the feel of seasons, lots of outdoors stuff, including golf, or course and nice food and relaxed lifestyle.

I hate the winter, don't like the cold, and I don't expect that to change as I move (further) into my decrepitude, so places with snow are out for me. Year round in the low 20s and not too humid works for me. The Algarve would work too.

I’m already living that dream, though not in our first choice country. After speaking to expats in our first choice country we decided that as much as we loved it, it perhaps wasn’t the best place.

At the time of looking at our second choice country it was considering a levy on bank accounts holding above £50k. And so we moved onto our 3rd choice. There wasn’t much between second and third, so not really a loss choosing where we are now.

After much research we chose southeast Spain. A good tailwind, Almeria to Gatwick is 2 hours. Door to door to the eldest daughter’s in London is less than 5 hours. Warm winters, I bowled in shorts and t-shirt this afternoon. August is a bit steamy, but that’s what the jacuzzi is for. And its cheap as chips too.
I think I've called you a git before ... :)

Uk - Skye but the golf's a bit thin.

Some nice courses in the Border regions. The Hirsel at Coldstream is a smashing place, Selkirk is well regarded. You could even go to Kelso and luxuriate at The Roxburghe. A nice selection and a good, if little isolated, part of the country (y)

My realistic equivalent would be Dunkeld…still a possibility…(Tiree is perhaps my ‘spiritual’ home, but it’s just a bit too isolated, and very wild and bleak in winter)

I've never been to California. Parents have and loved it.
Between San Francisco and LA it's a very liveable climate all year round, barring the odd bit of climatic or seismic excitement. It'll never happen, but in my fantasy it's probably top of the list as a retirement destination.

Yeah there's a couple of those on my 'to do' list that I intend to play soon after getting back

Might seem a bit boring/safe to pick a UK location and there'd be times I'd no doubt miss the year round golf/sun I enjoy now & for those choosing locations round the world to live out your days, be aware that extended living overseas isn't all sunshine & roses. there's plenty that drives me mad/makes me envious of UK etc

My uncle spent his last 20 years in Hawick as a CofS rector and loved it there. His widow and second ex-wife still live there.
Scotland has to be the Inner Hebrides for me though. Many childhood holidays around the islands and Kyles of Bute. I still get a shiver down my spine when I remember the drives along the Rest and be Thankful.
Having said that, I'd prefer your tropical island between July and May.
