if you could give one tip to a new golfer

Spend 80% of your time putting and chipping because no matter how well you play you'll always need to fall back on your short game somewhere in a round.

At least some lessons
Try and get a mate (or mates) to start with you - sharing the experience is part of the fun, and you'll get better quicker if you bounce ideas off each other.
 
Have half dozen lessons to get the basics, then get out on the course and play and learn.

Enjoy finding your game!
 
Learn the game backwards. Putter and wedges first. Don't just try and hit driver all the time to practice
