If I could putt I'd be dangerous...

Title says it all really.

To cut a long story short:

Played with a friend yesterday. Struck the ball great, hit plenty of greens and left myself in great position for birdies/pars.

But my putting didn't turn up. Lost count of the three putts and a four jab at the last!

Anyone got any good putting practice tips/drills that I could try?

I had a look in the instruction section of GM website and I liked the look of one where you set up a putters length away and try and hole 25 consecutive putts. That's the kind of range I'm really struggling from.

I'm not alone!
Sounds like my last round, and the previous dozen.

It was suggested today that we overthink putting especially the shorter ones; so from 3ft and in we should just step up and hit it. It's got to be worth a try - it can hardly make things worse.

I don't take any practice strokes as I feel that leads to overthinking it. So, ironically, I think my problem is the exact opposite, I don't think about them enough!

Put some tee pegs upside down on a floor at home and putt up to those, make gates and putt through them, spread a load randomly and then put 6 balls down the try to putt them through your minefield without hitting a tee.

Seriously, all you need is a few golf balls, your putter and a bunch of tees and you can work on your putting in your front room!

I've got to admit that my putting stroke and stance is all based on what feels comfortable and not necessarily what is correct.

It's taken a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get my swing to where it is now, is the putting stroke just as hard to nail down?

On putts within three feet try looking at the hole when you putt. If you wanted to roll a ball in you wouldn't look at your hand.

gmac had a great video putting drill recently posted via GM i think where he lays a club about 2 feet past the hole and you have to hit 10 balls from about 20 ft away, the 'game' is the balls MUST reach or pass the hole but NOT hit the back club, he uses it regularly.

Have always struggled putting.

Until the pro at my place noticed my shoulders didn't line up right with a traditional putting grip so, if I hit the ball well rocking my shoulders it would go left.

Now putt left hand below right (only just though) and it has made a huge difference. I know if I hit the putt well it's going exactly where I'm lined up.

Edit: Meant to add that you don't necessarily have to putt left below right to achieve this. For me the problem was tucking my right elbow in closer to my side and the only way I could do this with it feeling comfortable was left below right.

I think the 2 'killers' from that range are decelerating into the ball, and trying to steer it.

From 3' and in I try to take the putter back no more than 4 or 5", and don't look up to see if you've holed it because a lot of the time you'll find you've looked up before you've hit it and that's when the steering happens. Pick your line, set up to it, then trust it.
