Ok all....Finally saved some of the hard earned and a little nod from the miss's and booked a block of 4 1 hour lessons.....

Im off 15.6 (16) at the moment and strive to get better but for the odd screamer of a good round that ill put together and beat my handicap there are numerous ones that accumulates the 0.1's back.....

Im obviously doing something well on the good ones but i cant figure out on my own exactly what..
Im told i have alot of good stuff going on in my setup and swing but its breaking down somewhere along the line...

Who has reaped the benefits of lessons and who has not...
For the record im pretty self disciplined in practising something until it works...Pretty stubborn like that.....

Also how would you space out 4 lessons....

ive definetly got major benefits from my lessons, ive went with different types of lessons too not always working on the same thing. first was a lesson on the swing then after working on that for a couple months i went on a playing lesson with my pro which helped cos he was able to see my whole game and could advise where to work on. i then had a short game lesson severly months latter as thats where i struggle most and i then just the other week had another playing lesson which i like the best cos it one gives me a chance to play a course id never be able to afford to play plus all the tips i get when going round i feel is much better value then an hours lesson. but lessons are definetly worth it im by no means a good player but ive improved so much since starting lessons.

I'm another who has seen huge benefits from lessons historically although I seem to have stagnated with my current coach and changes seem harder to implement and the rewards less easy to see. I am another who will work meticulously on the drills etc to get it right and so I am thinking of a) having a break from lessons short term and just getting a pre-season MOT once the last one is used on the 13th b) swapping my teacher for a fresh pair of eyes and view point

If I was you I'd have a couple of swing lessons, spread over 4-6 weeks so you can work on the changes between times and get use to them and also try them on the course so you can give your pro some feedback. I'd have a short game lesson as well and then either a pre-season refresher or a putting lesson as Spring comes

Have a lesson once in a while to keep you on the right track. Too many lessons too soon will probably confuse you unless you are just working on the same thing over and over.

Also there's plenty of reading and video material on the net that will help as well.

My advice is learn good habits, stick to them no matter what and keep building on them slowly.

yup, big rewards had, january last year i was hacking around the 20 hc mark, good long game but hit and miss in other area's. a 7 lesson session with one pro saw my hc drop from 20 ish (unofficial) to 16 (official). that range then under went a major refurb and i was forced to swap pro's, 2 5 lesson courses have seen my golf improve majorly and ive gone from 16 last year, to 12 at current.

As your swing matures it seems you get ride of old faults, and develop new ones, im going to have the winter ingraining the drills and working on everything that has been learned this year, before booking another 5 lesson course around january time. i want to get to 10 next season.

Well just to give the other side ....

I had lessons when I was off 12 and the first thing the pro wanted to do was to stop my out to in swing, spent hours of lessons trying to get the swing change working, lots of balls hit and achieved nothing. I couldn't get comfortable with the new swing plane, couldn't hit 2 shots back to back with the new swing, lost yards of my clubs and basically lost interest in the game too. Spent 4 months trying and then gave up the lessons and just played golf again.

Still play with a fade, although vastly reduced in the last year though. I just learnt to live with aiming a little left :)

Massive advocate of lessons. Advice I would give is -
-trust the pro unreservedly to get the most out of it. If you don't trust or like him, find one you do
-Spend plenty of time on the range and on the course working on what he tells you to do. It WILL feel alien, but work with it.
-don't go on the web looking for quick fixes, it's full of shamen and conflicting info.
-Have a lesson every 5-6 weeks, as long as you've put the work in from the last one.
-Enjoy it!

good luck

this been an interesting read and finally made my mind up about lessons i will prob book some come january. Wouldnt even mind being called a bandint come spring lol. i got my golfing aims for next year i want to drop from 27 to around the 20mark
