I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Greensome medal board comp today.
Me 5.4 and mate 14.4 were given 11 handicap. We were quite thrilled to shoot 6 over gross 76-11=65. Five under net.
Came 10th out of 58 pairs. 9-under won.
Don't know if there was a lowest gross prize.
Ah well, we did get a 2.
£3.62 each.

Another wasted round tee to green was really good and then chance after chance wasted with the putter. Tee time delayed by 45 mins due to fog so didn’t even have time for a beer afterwards.

Played in the afternoon which was a great decision - beautiful day, 20°c, sunshine, hardly a breath of wind. Playing a little match against my 23 handicap mate (giving 12 shots).

I played so much better than last walk, ball-striking was miles better. Couple of early doubles which I felt I was unlucky on - course is dry as a bone and desperate for a bit of rain now, so I had a bad kick here and a scruffy lie there. Went on a nice run of par, par, bogey, par to finish the first nine with 17 points, and 3 up in the match - and the bogey was actually a second-ball birdie after going out of bounds by two feet with my first tee shot.

My putting had been really good, but it just deserted me on the 2nd hole (we started on 10 today) as I missed a two-footer for par and three-putted the 3rd - overall I started the second nine slowly with four one-pointers, but recovered with nice pars on the 5th and 6th to seal the 4 & 3 win. Parred both the par 5s at the end as well to finish on 81 and 32 points.

Very happy with how I played, making 9 pars in the end, and putting really well for all but 1 or 2 holes. Plus I had the summer shoes out for the first time this year, shorts & t-shirt weather - can't beat it!

Board comp at ours today. I played okay, not great, not awful, but made some schoolboy errors in my 32 points.

Played off the back tees, as tough as it gets with lush rough and bone hard greens. Current leader (and he won’t be overtaken) received 31 shots off 95%, and is sitting pretty with a ludicrous 51 points. A whopping ten points clear of second place.

Hmmmmm.
I thought this sort of score was a teething problem for the new system.

Obviously not.

As my wife would put it, I had the grump on today. I knew in advance it would be strokeplay, least favourite format, but the comp was mistakenly set up for white tees, an extra 400yds. Add in the greens were tined 2 days ago and this was my first qualifier of the year. Putting was a nonsense. So many putts between my group missed from 2ft and in, more 3 putts than 2. As has been said before, all that was missing was the windmill and the clowns face 🤬.

The rest of my game was a mixed bag. I haven't found a consistent swing yet this season. I'm patchy, some very good, some very poor. I'm not looking for perfection, just better consistency. I don't think I'm far off but I'm certainly not there yet.

As per @Junior above, I need to go out and practice. Smart practice 🤔
Textbook for a non qualification!

But common sense is lacking in some clubs imo.

I think the fella is relatively new to the game, and I suppose the argument will be levelled that his handicap isn’t keeping pace with his improvement. Regardless, scores like this shouldn’t happen, and there was more than a little grumpiness in the bar at lunchtime.

A lot of our low single figure members won’t enter Stableford board comps, and this sort of score will do nothing to encourage them that handicap events are a level playing field.

It’s a numbers game.
There’s so many of this sort of player now ones always having “ one of them days.”

It’s put a lot of players at ours off the comps.
There’s so many empty slots in the comps now that just didn’t happen before.

If it’s a board Comp why don’t the Club put a handicap limit on it?

Our Board Comps vary from either Max 18 or Max 24 PH, those above are still welcome to enter, they just can’t win the “Board” element of the Comp.
