Day two of a little trip to South Wales today for the Winter Open at Porthcawl

We put in 3 teams of a mix of forumers and ex forumers plus mates

Weather was lovely , wind was brutal

Our best score was what we thought was a very good 75

Best scores on the day

2nd 83

Both very very good scores

Winners

Nothing but a bunch of cheats

Played an open Stableford via Howdidido on my way from Herts to Notts. Joined by a pal; a couple of strangers made up our four. Lovely fellas.
Stoke Rochford, 10 miles south of Grantham, right on the A1 was very convenient for my journey.
Really lovely club and course in great condition for February. My first round with an electric trolley and a full(ish) set of clubs since October.
I would imagine it's stunning in the summer. I'd definitely recommend it.
30-something points on a course I didn't know wasn't too disappointing.

I played in an open there a couple of years ago and agree it's a really nice course, some great holes and views.

2nd year running someone has won by a BIG margin. 😭😭 I'm sure they just all played their best! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤢🤮

Back last night from a weekend in Portugal for my 40th (which is next week). My first trip to the country and my first proper golf trip for over 6 years.

We stayed at Amendoeira Golf Resort and had the best weekend. Everything went super smoothly, the weather was glorious and we all had a fantastic time.

We played the Faldo twice and the O'Connor three times. We also played the par 3 course a few times too.

The Faldo completely beat me up both times, I think I was 12 over my handicap on the first round and 9 over on the 2nd.

The first two rounds on the O'Connor I shot a 93 and then an 88, and then yesterday morning everything clicked and I shot a 5 over 77. I made a par after finding the water on one hole, getting up and done from 167 yards, with about 150 of those being across the water. The next hole I made a sandy par sinking a 20 foot putt. It was one of those days.

Amendoeira was great though, the staff were all super friendly and helpful, the apartment was amazing, it was very good value for money and I would highly recommend it.

Back to reality getting off the plane in Luton with it being -1!

Great resort with two very good courses. The Faldo just a little tricked up in places for my liking, so prefer the O’Connor personally.

Glad you enjoyed it. Love golfing in Portugal.

I played yesterday and am showing a slight return to the old form. Best score since returning to playing with 35 points (albeit with my higher handicap). I won the kitty for the second time since returning, well pleased.

Monthly Mug (our stroke) started with a 3 putt and finished with a 3 putt.....putting was awful but still managed to shoot 4 over par, boy I hate this game at times.

Course was wet, really wet, so we decided to just play 12 again today, that works with a cut through. Very happy. Drove well, irons good. As the weather was warmer I was a lot looser and I was able to follow through much better. It hurts my back too much in the cold so this was great. It's satisfying to get a genuine follow through on shots.

Couldn't get my rescue going, I think I'm just trying too hard with it. One to work on.

Ball retriever was perfect 😉

Monthly stableford and came in with a really steady 38 points. Really pleased with my short game especially given some of the awful lies and mud balls round the greens. And the new putter is still my best friend.

Back to hitting it quite well again after two weeks of… questionable quality.

Started with a three putt bogey, thought “here we go again” and then parred round to the 11th. Dropped a few on the way back in for a +6 game of 73. Right on HC ao no complaints. Had a few lip out for birdies but that’s the breaks I suppose.

Took the money again but did buy the lunches after.

36 points off 4 handicap, including a -1 gross back 9 (3 birdies) and came 5th in the swindle (out of 9 players). Tough school.

Back 9 should've been -3 gross. Balls.

Played today and it was a lovely afternoon until the 13th when we got a 10 minute soaking!

I was 3 over after 9 holes and then finished 9 over par, finishing bogey-bogey-bogey. Shooting an 80 when I wasn't striking the ball anywhere near what I should be was very encouraging. I putted really well today, been using a Bryson tip over the last 2 rounds that has been game changing for me.

You can’t say that, then not tell us Brysons secret weapon 😂😂

It sounds odd but you basically feel as if you stop as you hit the ball. Take your putter back as normal, and then feel as if you stop at the ball. It has really improved my putting, especially short ones.
I know already I'm going to try that next week, me and a few others no doubt. If you've just suckered me in with made up guff ............well played 👏

Olly Leett says your putting stroke backswing and follow through should be the same length. When I try it I get the same feeling as described above by Deano.

I'm being genuine, I promise. I'll see if I can find the video on it.
People used to say your followthrough should be longer than the backswing, but then there were others like Crenshaw and Cam Smith who say the opposite, they putt better with a long backswing and just let the club 'fall' on the ball with only a short followthrough. This Bryson tip sounds like it promotes the latter. I can see some logic in it, the shorter the followthrough then maybe the less likely you are to pull it or push it? I've been putting well so I try not to overthink what I'm doing - but I do think my followthrough is quite short now.
