I suggested to the wife we got a dash cam when we got our car she wasn’t sure why I wanted one.
Today it turns out it was the best idea ever. Some idiot reversed into my 5 week old car then had the nerve to get out and check the damage then carry on with his life as normal.

Unfortunately for him he failed to notice my dashcam has recorded him pulling off my car then sending his passenger to check the damage in full HD 😃
So I’ve not only got his number plate I even have a face to go with it. I’ve spoke to 101 they’ve opened me a case file and arranged for me to take them the footage!

If you don’t have one I highly recommend it! In theory it’s paid for it self already it’s not major damage to the car but I hit the roof when I seen it.

With the amount of driving I do, I have been very tempted to get one. I saw Halfrauds were doing some good deals on them too. I just don’t fancy seeing all the cables!

Get a hardwire kit you can’t see any cables at all .
If you fit it behind the rear view mirror you can’t see it at all.
Look on YouTube how to hardwire a dash cam to your model ,it’s really easy.

What make did you get?

Would you recommend a particular maker?

Nextbase 312G .
Prob the best on market for public cars.
You don’t need fancy gizmos ,it’s simple to install.
Comes on automatically with ignition and goes off when you turn off.(if hardwired in to fuse box ).
Just get a bigger capacity memory card as it records on a loop .
I carry a spare card and will swop it if any incidents occur.

Mine has the wires totally hidden, granted it cost a little bit more getting it done, but the only thing visible is the camera, which clips into a mount at the top of the windscreen.

Any decent DIY person can do this in 30mins it’s a doddle.
Find the fuse box and the fitting kit has a piggy back fuse to install the power cable.
I always use the rear wiper fuse. 15amp.
Hide cables under door seals and head liner to unit.

You tube has videos of most car models on the market have a look.

I can say as a not very hands on person I managed to do both my cars (Honda Civic and hrv) earthing the cable was the hardest part for me but once I found a bolt to attach the wire too both times no problem

Pick a fuse that comes on with car (light 12v socket) and boom

Both wired up and come on and off when car starts and stops

Haven’t had to use it in anger yet but used it to prove a guy at work jumped a red as I was winding him up and he claimed never happened.. so I put it on the big screen for him lol he went redder than the light he jumped!

I’m glad I didn’t pay to have it done. Contacted 2 companies .. wanted £120 per car (one offered me £20 off second car) considering the camera was £120 ish, hard wire kit £20 and memory card £10 (twice so £300) I wasn’t gong to shell out another £200 odd for someone to do 10 mins work! Give it took me a lot longer because I was a novice but that £200 went nicely towards my next golf holiday

Had one for years, got it after the wife was involved in a head on crash.

It has come in handy 3 times but the police down here in Wiltshire don’t seem to care if you have one or not, I have offered a video clip to them of a car mounting pavement and missing lady and child by inches, they didn’t follow it up and nothing was done about the driver.

Just picked up the 312. Guy I spoke to was honest and said the only reason to go for the 512 would be for the rear camera, but unless I reverse into something, something from behind will have hit me. Went for the 32gb card...so should be plenty of storage

I now won’t drive a car without one

The clutch went in my civic and whilst off the road I borrowed my dads car twice for when the wife needed my car.. I made sure to use the dash cam and the basket wire attachment

Same when I rented a car to drive my sister to her wedding couple months ago.. installed it temp in there

Vital now days

I see Halfords are pricing the 312GW at £109 incl fitting. Sounds good?

Which Best Buy
Bought mine for £80 inc hardwire kit which is £20 so not bad price .
It’s not hard to do though.
But if your not into diy that’s not bad.

Think the GW is one up from G. And connects to your phone to download footage!

Is there a direct correlation between owning a dashcam and driving at a snails pace?
Few times I’ve been stuck behind a car with one stuck to the windscreen. Gives me the impression that drivers just get them to purposefully capture footage to stick on YouTube or the likes.

Frankly they’ll get two fingers as I overtake and hope I appear on the internet.
