I have a dilemma

You may have read on here or in this months' magazine that I am the lucky winner of a Pair of Footjoy Icons through my Course Review of the Month.

I'm reliably informed that Icons are top end shoes, with an RRP in the region of £200.

So the dilemma is, as a lowly 28 handicapper, I've read that I'm not worthy of using top end equipment or flashy clothing. So what should I do? Maybe I should see if there are any Cat 1 handicappers that would be willing to swap the Icons with a pair of Dunlop shoes that are more befitting of my status.

Or you could just enjoy them as you did win them! They will be damn comfortable.

I've got a Cat 2 pair of Nikes in the shed, a little dirty and cracked in places and are bout as waterproof as a tea bag but I'd happily swap with you

Nah... you'll need to swap them for a pair of wellies - which, as a 28er, you'll need to keep going into ponds to get your ball back. You should swap them with me - a cat 3 who never goes in ponds

maybe a couple of dunlop carry bags over the top would be a compromise you get the comfort of the FJ but to all the hes carp shouldnt have new gear gang you still look like a sterotypical 28 handicapper?

Never ever scrimp in the shoe dept. you walk miles in the dam things so treat your feet and enjoy the shoes

Of course in the opposite corner to the "You're not good enough for those" approach to gear there is the "Better gear will make me a better golfer" school of thought.

I'd go with that one and tell yourself that with a pair of Tour quality shoes you will soon be playing Tour quality golf. Remember this game is all about confidence.

But shoes aren't enough by themselves, so contrary to the advice above I'd suggest you now get yourself a Tour bag, an 8 degree driver with the most exotic shaft you can find (preferably a limited edition tour spec special order), a set of forged blades, 4 custom fit wedges, a Scotty Cameron, a few dozen Titleist ProV1s, some skins base layers, some Galvin Greens and see that h/c tumble!



On a more serious note I'd always advise people that shoes are the most important bit of kit. It's the only part of your gear that can actually cause you physical as opposed to mental pain on the golf course.

Congratulations on the win. Wear them with pride matey. Your feet are the most important thing when you get old. You walk 4 miles around the course every time you play but you wouldn't want to be doing it in work boots or some cheapo trainers.

Forget the notion that you are not good enough to wear them. Trust me I've some petty loud FJ's and I probably (definitely) haven't the game to carry them off but so what. Icons are a lovely shoe and you'll love them. Get out there and enjoy the fruits of your labours

I think you should cover them up by putting plastic bags over your feet. No one will ever know what is beneath. You could be in stealth mode. Especially if you use a bin liner.
