I hate putting

I have to say I'm the complete opposite.

I'm a pretty godd putter despite my handicap and regularly only take around the 30 putt mark (32 last weekend). Including this little gem, about 20ft across a slope with about 2ft of break) for birdie on a 203 yard par 3 (If you look closely, you can see the line of the putt in the dew on the grass)

I'll quite often spend an hour or two on the practice putting green at the range fliting between lag putting and holing out from iside 6 feet. I enjoy the challege.

Often when I go with a few fiends they will smash 100+ balls with there driver (while I'll work through my pro's drills) and wonder why, when we play at the weekend, they struggle to hole out on the greens despite hitting pretty good tee shots.

Putting makes up quite a few strokes in your round. IMHO the better putter you become the better player (I.E Lower handicap). Being a good driver of a ball, while impressive, doens't always yeild the same results.

Just my opinion mind you :D

You're absolutely right Gareth. If I was even an average putter (i.e. 33 putts per round), I'm pretty sure I'd be in single figures. According to Scoresaver 2, my long game is equivalent to a 6 h/cap - over 60% of FIR and over 50% of GIR - but my putting is equivalent to a 24 h/cap. I had 42 putts on Sunday :( Combined with a slight off-day with the rest of the bag, which can happen from time to time, I shot 8 over h/cap.

If your swing is a bit off, which can happen to anyone, a good short game will rescue you. If your short game is off, it doesn't matter how good you are tee to green - you won't score.

Obviously it depends on how far they are, but how many of 11 birdie putts do you think you should make? Especially on 'crazy greens'.

On that course yesterday, possibly not too many more.....??......maybe just 1 other of the birdie chances, as on some of yesterday's greens, u actually put Away from the hole, as they are "Augusta" like greens, severe slopes
Had 2 x 3 putts, 1 with a mis-read, 1 on a hole on a slope u just couldn't get close to, but these greens at Sharpley are "stupid" in places, and a lad played with yesterday (won't name) had a 6 putt on 1 of their greens at weekend...!!
So I'm not particularly getting too down on myself over yesterday, that was just example

But I know even on my home course, putting costs me 2-3 shots per round, and I do practice, put the work in, just really trying hard this year to get the ball upto the hole.........maybe I'm just a choker....:)

Lots of practice and hard work is the only cure for bad putting. I am not a good putter and I have suffered with the yipes for 10 years on and off. I spend more time practice my putting than anything else, I regularly check my grip, alignment, posture, and stroke.

Putting is mostly in your head. When it comes to pace, I find it helps to not think about it. There is a book by Bob Rotella called "putting out of your mind" which basically says everyone has the ability to judge distance and pace, you just have to let you subconscious do it for you. I think the phrase he uses is "Gaining control by giving up control". I try to never think about how hard to hit a putt, when I do it goes wrong.

You also have to try not to care about the result, there are a lot of factors in putting that are outside of your control and good putts don't always go in.

The problem with golf the better you are at something the less often you get to do it! I love putting but only get to do it about 30 times per round, someone who hates/fears putting probably gets to do it 36-40 times per round!
