Today was phone upgrade day. I had looked at all the other options, and with deals in hand I phoned O2 to negotiate. And their response was...........

Basically you negotiated too good a deal with us on your last contract, we have not made enough money on you so we really do not care if you stay as a customer. I pointed out that the deal I was looking for was being offered by various high street retailers and if I went through them O2 would have to pay them comission as well. The response was, well go through them then

To add insult to injury, they also want to withdraw the contract I entered into 18 months ago because they had given me too much of a discount on their contract prices.

Now I do not expect something for nothing and expected my contract to go up in price as the phones I was looking at are not cheap but to be basically told by 2 people at O2 (one being a supervisor) that I really am of no interest to them as a customer was a bit much to take.
 
I had that 3 years ago. I left and went to T mobile. I don't hate O2, it's a business, and if they aren't making any money, why would they continue? Just take your custom elsewhere. Simples.

On some contracts I fail to see where they make any money. I have a touch screen Nokia. This phone retails in HK at about £500. I have it on contract at £15 per month for an 18 month contract. It doesn't add up.
 
I had 3 call me up and offer me a new phone and a different tariff last year which was cheaper than the one I already had with them. Upgraded to an E71 which was a different world compared to my old brick and I'm paying £5 per month less for the privilege. Very weird
 
It was not as much the decision that riled me it was the attitude. I appreciate it is a business decision but then where is the sense in the option to go to a high street store, sign up on a cheaper contract with O2 and O2 still have to pay comission to the store.
 
In my much younger days I was employed by Simon Jordan in the mobile phone industry and we sold shedloads and I was earning £££'s in comission.

Basically we were giving the top phones of the day away for free on a 12 month contract of £15 a month (£225) when the wholesale cost of the phone alone would be £200 or so.

The reason is that the network were paying huge comissions to retailers, mainly based on the hope that customers would cane their allowances and run up lumpy bills.

Also, they were building up customer numbers, One2One (now t-mobile) were taking on anyone, and I mean anyone. A crackhead with no credit history who has lived in his gaff for 3 weeks? No problem sir, have this shiny new Nokia!

The reason for this is that they were building up their cutomer base so when and if a buy-out occurred, they would be worth more as a company.
 
I had an original iPhone with O2 and they drove me mad. Couldn't really care a toss even though I spent a lot of money with them, and I was happy to go to Vodafone as soon as I could.
 
Get your contract off of the highstreet retailer and know you have one up on O2, you get your contract at the price you are willing to pay and they lose out by having to pay the commission. It's the nearest you will get to spitting in their eye.

You'll be luck if O2 pay £60 for that £500 phone.

I'm the opposite, I fell out with Orange and cant be happier with O2.
 
When the Missus and I first moved to Bexhill her mobile phone was with BT cellnet (I think) who were eventually taken over by O2. She couldn't get a signal at all down here so swapped out to Vodafone.
A couple of years ago, lured by the deals that O2 were offering, we approached them again about a new phone for Sam and I mentioned the lack of coverage in this area. The girl assured us that this was no longer the case and that we would get "superb" reception, so we went ahead and ordered one.
It turned up, we connected it all up and lo and behold, no signal although my Voda was showing 5 bars.
I contacted O2 to let them know I wasn't very happy and the girl said "if you go outside Mr Smith, can you get a reception"
I replied "what if I can? Does that mean that she will only know if she gets a call, or can only make a call if she goes out in the garden????
Needless to say, the phone was sent back and contract cancelled.

The simple fact is mobile phone companies do not make money out of joe blogs, they make money from SME & corporate accounts.

3 network coverage is by far the worst not forgetting their poor customer service.

I cannot think of a worse job than speaking to customers who always say “I will cancel my contract” if they don’t get what they want, they are offered 5% discount and walk away feeling they have taken a corporate business to the cleaners, trust me I used to work for O2. SME’s where not that bad but I couldn’t imagine working with Joe Bloggs calling day in and out.
