I bought today.....

Remarkably similar to my set-up. Driver, 16° 3 wood, 21° 7 wood, 23° hybrid, then 6 iron as my irons are strong-lofted. I like the set-up because each of headcover clubs gives me different options rather than just being the same club in different lofts.

I've gone a little the other way, with a recent weaker lofted iron set. Back into a 26 deg 5 iron.

Then started out with a 21 deg hybrid, and 18 / 15 / 11. Found the 21 a little low flying so swapped for the 24 and it works in terms of gapping and options.

Never got the 7 or 9 wood working for the gapping personally.

One of the best moves I've made was ditching a 3 wood and using a 5 wood with the loft turned down a degree. Plenty distance off the tee plus so much more of an option from fairway.

I think getting rid of 4 iron next in favour of a high lofted hybrid is the way to go.
3 wood and 4 iron have never been clubs I liked so pointless having them.

Haha, I did the opposite - had a 5 wood down at 17° then I got the 16° 3 wood instead. Even though it's only 1 degree different, it does seem to launch a bit lower than the 5 wood did, so it's really nice for a fairway-finding tee shot. There are three short par 4s at mine where I just hit the 3 wood every time. I wouldn't get a 13° 3 wood, had one donkeys years ago but didn't have the speed to really launch it properly. Current one at 16° is night and day though, very easy to hit (Ping G425 SFT).

Just assembled what needed assembly on the new trolley and it made me realise how old, rickety and loose the old one was...
Yeah, it was time.....😯

Yet another experiment. Ordered a Mizuno ST Max 230 a couple of days ago that got here today. Clubhead is 12 degree. My current Cobra driver is a 9 degree set up to 10.5. My plan for tomorrow is to use both of the drivers to see if the 12 degree will get a better ball flight for me.......I might even turn it up to 14 degrees and see what that will do for me. I don't carry a 3 wood, but I'm hoping that off the winter mat I might get a decent flight that will be inbetween the driver and my 5 wood. Several holes that might be the better club to use off the tee.....

Golf pride align plus 4 grips. Went to the range for the first time in forever and I love them on the irons but the drivers turned into a hook machine !

A Ventus Velocore Blue 6X driver shaft from golfclubs4cash. Had a £15 voucher so cost £185.

Played it for the first time today and my driving was good, not £185 better though. 😂

It is a momentous day for me today. Something that happens only once in every 16 years, approximately. Arriving today was a new set of irons – nearly.

1977 - I had Maxfli International irons 2-SW.
That was 10 clubs.

1992 - I had Ram Laser Fx forged irons 1-SW.
That was 11 clubs.

2008 - I had Ping G10 3&4, Ping i10 5-PW and two more Ping wedges 52° and 58°. That was 10 clubs. First and only set with 3 “wedges”.

End of 2025 and I take delivery of 8 Ping i530 irons with graphite shafts, regular flex.
I will require 2 more wedges to make 10 clubs – very similar indeed to that 1977 set.
Very, very lucky to find a nearly new set exactly matching Gainsborough Ping Fitter’s specifications. Thus not breaking a promise that I am sure I made on here about not buying a brand new set of irons ever again.

The longest is 19° and the 8th club is 47°.
Two wedges of 52° and 58° is what I will be looking for to make a set very much like my 1977 set up.
46°, 52° and 58° is what I have been playing mostly in recent years, so not much of an adjustment to be made.

I have merely to get used to the new reality of what I think of as a 2-iron having a “4” on the sole etc and “4 wedges” in the bag.
Hey-ho the modern game – plus ça change.

Next week – should see the arrival of Ping G440 LST 10.5° driver, Alta CB Blue 50 stiff. This is brand new, but is funded entirely with pro-shop credit.
Two more clubs to fit between driver and 19° iron will be a task for next year.
I will continue with stuff I have already for the time being – a 15° 3-wood and hybrids of 16° and 20° - choose 2 from 3.

Oh dear, there I go again: a third Honma club in as many weeks. This time, it's a 25 degree utility iron. The Honma TW-U 25 with a Vizard graphite shaft. Picking it up this Friday. Good as new. So that's a Honma driver, good as new, a brand new Gap Wedge, and this Utility iron. That's me done for 2026. Now selling some Callaway i-brids, which had the wrong shafts for me.

I might jump into the popular side of the golf world and get a Spurk mat.....although I'm really tempted to add to my cheapie purple golf mat with a bright red one I saw online.......

Also note that since I added the Mizuno ST 230 Max driver to the bag....and it's now set at 14 degrees....love it. Finally swinging easier again after a couple of months and this driver is getting me in the middle of the fairway. +2 until the last hole today......double bogie there for a +4 round.
