One of my favourite balls was the Taylormade (a). I had played at Balcomie with a fellow who had been involved in ball design and manufacture with Callaway and Taylormade. He explained the (a) to me and said it was the best ball Taylormade had at the time. Too bad they stopped making it, but I think the Tour Response is close to the (a).Dozen Tour Response on Amazon for £30.
Good ball, plays as well as the Pro V1 for my game.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Tour Response is the one that directly replaced the (a) in their line-up.One of my favourite balls was the Taylormade (a). I used it for a while a few years ago, but then I was put off it by the MyGolfSpy 2023 ball test, which rated it the shortest distance ball with driver. Literally 9 or 10 yards shorter that the other balls I was considering using, which was enough for me to rule it out.
Just think if it was shorter 9 or 10 yards left of right then could be the diference of being in play or OB![]()
Can’t say I’m losing any distance with them at all over the Pro V1.Yeah, I'm pretty sure Tour Response is the one that directly replaced the (a) in their line-up.

My speed is pretty slow so I look at the 'slow' speed in the MGS testing. Might make a difference. Can’t say I’m losing any distance with them at all over the Pro V1.
Hit them as far with my 5w as my mate does with his driver.
My understanding is that they are designed for a slow swing speed. My speed is pretty slow so I look at the 'slow' speed in the MGS testing. Might make a difference.
Hotgolf have the X-002 in white for £69.99 and the 003 at £49.99.A rather lovely pair of Payntr X-001 mesh spikeless shoes. On sale direct from them for £79.99, then 10% discount for first purchase.
They feel almost perfect and once broken in will be, I'm sure.

Well the one I used was a different version, a year or more before the MGS testing came out. They basically said the new version was softer, but perhaps too soft to get any real distance. I don't know, I did think it was weird that they ranked so badly though - the other one bottom of the pile was also Taylor Made, TP5 I think. They're probably on another new version since then anyway. My understanding is that they are designed for a slow swing speed.
Did you see noticeable drop off in distance when you used them?
The TP5 is definitely not a short hitting ball. Sounds more like bias than science in their testing.Well the one I used was a different version, a year or more before the MGS testing came out. Well they use robot testing of course, but maybe something went wrong, I don't know. Here is the table of data. TP5 is bottom on distance for fast swings too.The TP5 is definitely not a short hitting ball. Sounds more like bias than science in their testing.
I’m certainly not seeing any adverse results from the TR ball. But then I don’t read tester reviews instead of actually trying a ball (e.g everyone said the RB Tour was a good ball, not what I found personally)![]()
Interest table that, bookmarked, thanks for posting.Well they use robot testing of course, but maybe something went wrong, I don't know. Here is the table of data. TP5 is bottom on distance for fast swings too.
Anyway, of course we need to try them and our experience may differ, but I can't try 100 different balls, so I use the MGS test to choose which ones to try! And I'm currently using Vice Pro Air, which isn't in their test anyway because it replaced the Pro Soft.![]()
