I bought today.....

2 recent golf purchases for me. Been struggling with hybrids for a couple of years, very inconsistent, so I’m trying out different designs and older designs and newer designs.

Made a boo boo with the first one, a titleist 816 H1. Not many pics on eBay but the head looked decent and it was £30 so I bought it. Arrived and it’s an x stiff shaft! I’ll give it a try but very unlikely to be suitable, should get my money back at £30 though.

So then I bought a Taylormade stealth 2 no. 4 hybrid, £70, really good condition.

Fingers crossed one of them suits me!

Have you tried a 7 wood?

Yeh, I’ve got a 7 wood, it’s a great club but it flies too high and max 180 yards because of that, so I need something that flies a bit lower and gets 190-200. If these hybrids don’t work for me I’ll look at a 5 wood.

Of course I could get a lesson but where’s the fun in that!

My 7 wood also goes around 180-185 and I use a higher-lofted 3 wood as my 200 yard club. A 16° G425 SFT to be precise. I use one hybrid as a sort of utility / 175 club, I've never seen them as distance clubs really - woods are easier to hit a long way in my experience.

I’ve always struggled with fairway woods, again, I should probably have a lesson. I think I’m way too steep as they normally come out low and peel off right, but not consistently enough for me to aim further left, and the curve loses so much distance it’s just not worth hitting them. Apart from the 7 wood that is, it’s been easy to hit from day 1, but where I play is usually quite windy and so I tend to only use it in certain situations. It’s ideal for hitting a green where I need to carry a hazard and stop quite quickly.

I had a ping g25 hybrid which was like a wand for a good year or 2, easy to hit and went the 190-200 yards. I then had a few rounds where I couldn’t hit it, no idea why, I just constantly topped and thinned it. It went on the naughty step and eventually got sold. Bought another similar one a while later but it wasn’t the same.

Sounds like you come from out to in ,in your path.
The more loft you have gives more backspin which overides the side spin to a degree.
It’s why 7 wood is good but 3 wood isn’t as good.

Hybrids are basically meant to be played like irons
The tops and thins probably come from having the ball to far forward like playing a wood.
But a hybrid has a shorter shaft and has to be played further back in the stance.

This is me just thinking out loud and what I felt having the same problems as you in the past.

He might be striking slightly down on it as well, but getting the hands too far in front, delofting it and opening the face to the right (giving the low & right flight that he mentioned). I think you have to strike it fairly level with a wood, whereas the hybrid as you say is more like an iron so you can strike down on it a little. Agree with the more loft comments, I could never hit a 13° 3-wood years ago, but now I've got a 16° it's much easier.

Yep, that’s me. I have an over the top swing, which is manageable with irons and to some extent hybrids, but I do struggle with a 3 wood. When I first start and was struggling to break 100, I would ‘pick’ the ball with irons, which may have suited the fairway wood back then a little bit, and also the hybrid (although losing some of the benefit). As I’ve got better I now hit down on the irons better, but can’t seem to change my swing to suit a fairway wood.

Also agree about the ball being too far forward with a hybrid. I dunno, daft old game.

I really should have a series of lessons!

Bought AI Smoke 3 and 5 woods from Callaway Pre-owned. They're in Very Good condition, so if I don't like them I can return them or flog them on eBay without losing any money.

One thing that plagued me was I shifted ahead of the ball on my downswing.( moving towards target)
This steepens your swing and gives a negative Angle of attack.
This deloft the club.
Might be as simple as that.
Lesson yes then practice.

I've given up on CPO.... I find the website is shockingly poor...slow, half the time it fails to load......just really poor..
Anyone else?

It’s the worst, most un-user friendly website in history. Shame because they do have some absolute bargains on there, just near impossible to find.

Agreed, it’s utter tedium trying to navigate it. Saying that, I find the same with GC4C and GolfBidder. eBay listings by far the easiest to navigate.
