Hi all,
I need something Clarified......
I havent bought any hybrids yet but was in with my pro this morning and i fell in love with the MD Golf Seve Icon hybrids......I can buy these for 60€ each which if my maths are right seems very reasonable compared with the competition...
My questions are....1. What lofts do i buy.
2. which irons do they replace.
3. how many do i need
4.As my most consistent long iron is my 5 iron do i keep this or replace it...
5.Are they worth buying.
I dont carry a 3 iron or a 3 wood and only the standard PW and SW......Any help would be greatly appreciated..... ;) ;)

1. What lofts do i buy. start with a 3 iron replacement?
2. which irons do they replace. 20/21 degree = 3 iron. 23/24 degree = 4 iron
3. how many do i need. Probably only 1 to start, see how you get on
4.As my most consistent long iron is my 5 iron do i keep this or replace it... yes, keep your 5 iron. If you need a 5i rescue, you're in trouble. (i.m.o.)
5.Are they worth buying. yes, I think so.

I think for a lot of golfers a hybrid instead of a 3 iron should be obligatory as it gives the majority of players so many more options and is simply easier to hit. Its no coincidence that an incrteasing number of sets are only sold from 4 iron to PW (many leaving out sand irons too) as even cyncial manufacturers realise the 3 iron is an unpopular choice.

My advice is try as many 20-21 degree versions (some are more offset than others which may help) and find one you like. After that I guess you need to decide how well you hit a 4 iron, how often you use it and whether a replacement hybrid makes more sense. Carry on with your irons from 5 downwards.

Depending on your bag set up, I'd also look at increasing your wedge options. Find out what loft your PW and SW are and try and get a gap wedge to fit into the middle (eg your PW may be 46 and your SW 56 degrees so a 52 would be ideal)

If im honest i hit my 5 iron very well ...my 4 is to say the least kinda stubborn at times.... it does often surprise me though like 2 weeks ago i hit it off our 168mtr par 3 4th into a headwind and stuck it 6ft from the pin.....my problem is i hate gining in to it id love to be able to hit it well so maybe its just more practice i need..... Also is a 15deg hybrid the same as using a 3 wood or would i be better off with the fairway........ What bag line up would you recommend homer.....
My present is 1.MacGegor MacTec NVG2 Draw 10.5deg stiff
2.Wilson Staff FWC 5 Wood
3.Wilson Staff Di7's 4 - SW
4.Taylormade Rossa Monza Itsy Bitsy
Thats only 11 Clubs so im allowed another 3.....
Bear in mind too that i could change the PW and SW as i think the bounce on the soles of these are alightly thick..... i Struggle with them from bare lies also.... and i think the wilson staff Di7 standard set wedges are 43deg for the PW and 52 for the SW

Call me predictable, but why not try the Wilson Staff fybrid in 3 iron replacement. I have one and it's superb.

As for a 15 degree rescue....hmm....how good are you?

Personally I'm currently using
Driver
5 wood
3 hybrid
4-PW
52 wedge
56 "
60 "
Putter

I get all the versatility I need and an array of options around thegreen where my improved short game is beginning to show sign of fruition (at least it was before this enforced lay-off)

At the end of the day its down to personal preference and individual skill levels. I'll soon be dropping my 56 and 60 wedges and replacing them with a 3 wood and a 58 to cope with the wetter conditions. All I can suggest is trying a few hybrids out and maybe having a chat with a pro.

Again from personal experience and preferrence I'd rather have a 15 degree 3 wood than a 15 degree hybrid as the majority of 3 woods have low faces these days and are pretty forgiving and may be longer than the hybrid.

Both our ass't's have Copper (coloured?) Ping 2 irons in their bags.

Trouble for the rest of us though (taking this as an idea) is that these lads could hit 1 irons if they wanted, whereas the rest of us might struggle even with a 3i.

I have a 3 iron, I love it. Is it any use to me? NO. There a no par 3s that it's the right club for. I use my rescue for all sorts of distances these days.....it's almost like cheating.

God Lads im gonna have to try get across the pond for a game with ye some day.....there's savage banther between ye....... Anyway iv decide to go with the Wilsons over the MD's..
For me the ball flight of the Wilsons was much lower and more penetrating than the MD's they were nice also just the flight was a bit too high.....My club is an open parkland course that isnt really protected by hills or mountains even thogh both of these are within 3 to 4 miles of some of the holes it gets pretty windy and i need to be able to keep the ball under it a lot...... So iv decided on the 4h 24deg the 3h 21deg my 5 wood is 18 deg so i think the gaps are pretty consistant ....

Dave or Homer could any of ye tell me the lofts of the wilson standard wedges ....from posts iv read they seem to be way off the standard lofts for othe manufacturers?

I took this off the Wilson site for the US market as I couldn't find any info for Europe/UK. I think it should be relevant

http://media.wilson.com/media/wilson/golf/download/2009/2009_usa_ws_v3_m56577569830793901.pdf

They vary a fair bit dont they
WS Di9's PW 42.5DEG
WS Ci7'S PW 44 DEG
WS Pi7's PW 47 DEG
Im guessing my Di7's are the same as this years 9's which is 1 13deg gap between my pitching wedge and sand wedge...... Thats just plain nuts considering im very inconsistant with my pitching wedge....if im at 100mtr or below i find it very difficult to judge my strength with my PW as i hit it anywhere between 110mtr and 125mtr.
