Hybrid or fairway wood?

Why and when would you use a fairway wood instead of a hybrid/ recovery club, or the other way round.
My only preference is f.wood from the tee and hybrid off the deck, but they both go similar distancesrelative to the loft.
Excuse my ignorance if this is a retarded question.
Thanks
Tom

They should not go a similar distance.........hybrids are really closer to long irons. I use a 21 or 24 degree hybrid (depend on how windy it is), it replaces my 3 iron. My 3 or 5 wood goes longer and have longer shafts for that reason. So, length wise, I have driver, 3 or 5 wood, 21 or 24 degree hybrid, 4 iron and so on down.

..and no more than 17 clubs in my bag, what about yours?

It's a fair question. I prefer a fairway off a tee peg, every time. I'd rather take on almost any shot with a fairway, except a tight lie or rough lie. Then again, the distance normally makes the decision for me, as I don't have one of each for the same distance. The way I see it, certain designs of club suit players better. Strong players often balloon the ball more as they move from iron-hybrid-fairway...not a problem I have, but I can see the sense in using 2 and 3 irons for some people as opposed to either.

i've not had much experience with hybrids.i did have a 17* mizuno hybrid earlier on in the season but it was offset and i really struggled with it.

the 3 wood i had was great off the tee and the deck so for me i would use this all day long depending on the yardages.i hit my long irons relatively well so maybe there's no need for a hybrid in my game just now,i'd maybe try a 19* hybrid as a inbetween club.

The gap between 3 iron and 4 wood is too large for me, I hit my 4 wood very well, 3 iron is also one of my fav clubs but at 205'ish for 3 iron and 245'ish for 4 wood theres a gap for a 2 iron or 19* hybrid, really need fitted for one though.

I carried a couple of hybrids for a season or so. Never hit them particularly well, and playing in an Open competition this Summer where I topped 3 efforts with my 3 hybrid from the fairway finally convinced me to find it a new owner. I swapped out for a "pensioners" 7 wood, and much prefer hitting this, I feel a lot more confident with it. Longer par 3's or on a par 5 where I am (hopefully) playing for position will see me use it. I'm fine off of tight lies with it, if the ball is sitting up a bit I will attempt to hit my 4 iron instead.
Anything between 170 and 190 (on firmish ground) will see me going with the 7 wood, I'll just choke down on it a little for the "shorter" shots.

Until yesterday I was using an 18 & 21 hybrids off the fairway but I couldnt get the distance i needed from either so swapped out the 18 for a Cobra s2 5 wood for the longer shaft, larger head etc to give the the extra 20 yards I need (well thats the theory/rationale I gave the wife)

For many people the hybrid gives a flight higher than an iron but lower than a wood for a given distance. I couldn't get on with any hybrids untill I got the mizzy jpx and use it off the tee and ground, its probably my most used club after the putter

I carry the old Taylormade Rescue Dual 16 and 19 degree. I can rip that 16 degree from the tee box and from the deck it goes about 240ish with great height and stops on the spot when it hits the green. I can also hit it some distance with good height from the rough unlike with a 3-wood. So rescue clubs all the way for me.

One thing I would say about rescue/hybrid clubs is that a lot of people struggle with them as they try hitting it like a fairway wood. They should be hit like an iron with a descending blow rather than sweeping away like a wood.

For me it's a question of what the lie is like. If it's sat up I'm likely to have a thrash with the 5 wood. If there's any doubt then I go for the 23 degree hybrid which won't go quite as far but is easier to hit.

I use my 3 wood for tight par4's off the tee, and if the ball is sitting proud on the fairway of a Par5 and I fancy "having a go".

Hybrid (21) is my normal go to club for 2nd shot on Par5's - especially if the green is protected at the front, leaving me a wedge in (and a chance to putt for birdie)

I use a lot of hybrids of the tee and only generally use my 3 wood on one hole at my course. I do get questioned on occasions about tactics of the tee and asked whose nickers I'm wearing. But as a rule I can normally hit my hybrids further than must people hit there Driver, not all of course.

My 22* hybrid is my get out of jail club. My 5 wood flies further but needs a better lie. Different clubs for me.

Dont you just.... 20hc my botox!

i used to use the dual mid rescue which was like a hybrid/iron style but it could be a little inconsistent, went to the burner rescue which has a more fairway wood shaped head but flight was just too high. Learned to hit a 4 iron instead. ;)

Got to say though im totally hooked on my 5w off the deck although its not as long as i would like.
