Just about every hole on our course has waist high rough on both sides of every hole.... it means that if you go left or right off any tee (or long on some) then you're dead, you just can't find it... or manage to get it out if you do. They might as well just make the course OOB if you miss the fairway..... just crazy! We already have official OOB on some 14 holes of the course.... but if you stay away from it you're dead the other side of the fairway too

Would you enjoy playing a tight course that has OOB on all 3 sides of every hole?

Lose a couple of balls today did you James?

Not enjoyable to play, but often simply temporary. If the weather suddenly turns, it can catch green-staff and take a few days before they can get things back under control. Certainly saw that a few months ago when second cuts got deep enough to lose balls in in the space of 2 days!

That's what our' is like right now. Some of us are considering a letter to the greens committee expressing our concerns.

Some say that you shouldn't miss the fairway, but even pro's do that. Even if the lower h'cappers shouldn't there are plenty of higher one's who have little control of the ball.
If they/we start getting fed up with losing balls, searching for balls, playing provisionals etc I can see a lot of people leaving which will be bad for the club.

It's one thing for the US Open, they are the best players, have spotters, take drops when hitting it very wide in to grandstands etc and take 5 hours anyway.

Also, it makes the course look scrubby and un-cared for.

Parts of my place are the same at the minute, absolutely unfair I think when you miss a fairway by a few yards to have to reload as you know your unlikely to find your original ball.

Yes I know your not supposed to be there but not even pros play under those conditions, at our level we should be able to find the ball and have to chip out sideways at worse.

Yup - rough going mental round our track also. Strikes me the really deep stuff should be in areas where you shouldn't really be hitting your ball - and if you hit it into it and lose your ball then tough, deep stuff is attractive and natural (obviously). Rest of course should be cut down to a fair length - so that if you spot your ball you should be able to find it. If you don't - then again - tough. Where your shot is 'blind' rough should be cut generously 'off-line'to give you a 80/20 chance to find your ball without having spotted it (as you can't). Where you have trees reasonably 'in play' of stray shotys then rough should be cut down under trees.

Our rough is great, cut way down so virtually impossible to lose a ball and very easy to play out of. In fact the course is looking better than I can ever remember it. The only thing letting it down at the moment are the greens, which are just stupidly slow.

The same thing happened last year if I remember rightly damp and warm weather combined made growth incredibly quick not ideal but if the greens staff can keep either greens tees and fairways tidy and we have some long rough got to be the best option rather than short rough and shoddy tees and wolly greens?

Our place has trees down either side of most fairways which are tough to get out of if you go into them, they have now let the grass grow knee high in the trees so anything off line is pretty much a lost ball, unless your really lucky.

Really tough going at times.

Our course also has crazy rough, but like most places its wide enough that if you hit it you deserve it. If its as bad as descrided use irons and hybrids from the tee, let others lose plenty of balls and win medals and get cuts every week due to a high css. ;-)

if only it were that simple :-)

Chucked in a membership on a course back in the UK when they did this to the rough round the course (not a case of being caught out by a bit of rain)

the first 6 holes of ours are lke thisall year roudn anyway by eiter o.o.b. or trees...

you can have wrecked your card by the 5th....

it is what it is

This is happening where I play as well. You can really notice the impact on pace of play. During the medal last week you could see groups all over the course hunting for balls. The groups behind me played through each other 3 times as they were called through for a missing ball then had to let the other group back through whilst they were hunting. Not sure there is much that can be done but surely it is possible to have thick rough that creates a penalty without losing the ball.

At one stage last summer I gave up having 9 holes on my own in the evening as I was losing ball after ball that were not that wide but without anyone to spot or help hunt were impossible to find.

I hate that comment "you shouldn't be in there" because everyone goes in there at some point.

I think there is a big enough penalty that you wont get a good lie(most of the time) I feel really hard done by from losing a ball when its in play and less than 10 yards from a fairway/green

But you shouldn't be in there. That's why we have handicaps. If you or I can't drive straight enough, hit a 5i

Just have it OOB then why not ? look whether you wana accept it or not most of us , even the good players are going to be in the doo doo pretty regularly , the rough should be low & coarse , you can find your ball but will probably have to wedge it back into play , hence penalised for the bad shot but not loosing balls right left & centre & groups taking ages looking for balls .. seems pretty simple solutionn to me ..

one of the reason for high rough in ur place is economics , seemingly saving alot on fuel for the machiens by not having to cut it a few times ..

Exactly, golfs not meant to be easy. One wild shot into the mince during a medal and I'll likely go up 0.1 because I'm not good enough. I still go back for more ;-)

because you can play & are obviously very competitive , but for every one like you (&me) there are 10 maybe 15 people who play for fun week in week out , it might not be meant to be easy but your past time is meant to be fun ,if people dont enjoy it , they wont stay

I do see where your coming from, its just my personal preference. I'm actually not overly competitive, I just play the course and try and enjoy my day.

A bad day at golf is still better than a good day in the office
