How to play a hole with a carry too far

In theory are you allowed to change the type of ball you use during a round? ie, ProV to a distance ball

I know that it doesn't matter for friendlies etc but couldn't remember the actual rule.

Golf is supposed to be fun not an impossible situation for the many. Not making the carry is fine, being penalised at this level of golf for not hitting the ball far enough is ridiculous.

I don't want to make it out as impossible golf as its not even a long course and this only crops up when the usual tee-box for the yellows needs to recover (lots play an iron off the tee from its usual location)

the 15th at concra wood requires a good carry over a lake to a fairway at about a 45 degree angle. it just depends how much to want to bite off. you aim left for less carry. smashing par 5 !

I played a hole like that in Mauritius. The Ernie Els course Tanita (or something). Was a par 3 and the carry from the blacks was in excess of 200 yards I think (was some years ago).

Thanks all, honestly this hole would make your eyes pop when you first play it

Off the yellow the tee is in the trees with enough room to swing the club but not much more, carry the mangrove swamp onto a stretch of fairway about 100yrds long but a wide double bunker in the middle protects the usual landing spot. I mentioned earlier there is a drop zone on the far side of the carry if you don't make it (so its nearer the hole) but from the DZ you have no chance of clearing the second carry to reach the green (not least because it doglegs over a hill)

So you've made the fairway and avoided bunkers with the tee shot, next shot is over a second mangrove swamp similar distance to the first, onto a green that slopes back towards the swamp (there's a another drop zone next to the green if you don't make the 2nd carry)

1 side, rear & front of the green disappear into... yup, mangrove trees!

So if you don't get over the first carry your are forced to lay up from the DZ and now hitting your forth shot over the 2nd carry towards the green & if you don't land it on the green then the ball is probably gone & you're now pitching on for shot 6 with a 2 putt being a good putting stat given the slope!

Did I mention this was a par 4

Three times in last few months I've been ahead after 17 and lost the match on this 18th hole  I need to beat it or build a bigger lead!

Just went on their site and had a look at the 18th tee, although the pic is probably not taken from the whites, If you cant reach it just a nice pitch to a forward tee and hit your 2nd shot from there ! ;)
You can flick through to the 18th tee here.

Sorry I should have responded to the Camberley guess earlier, its not that course. It's the 18th on le touessrok gc, thank you Mr Langer!

If you're thinking about what ball you'll use, you've already dumped it in the hazard in my view. Treat it like any other tee shot, the worst that happens is you're playing 3 from the DZ and you lost a ball. If the carry is that far, the DZ is probably only a 7/8i from the green so should be bogey at worst (assuming it's a Par 4)

I know the one, its at Anahita gc (stunning course) its only about 2km from le touessrok

Hi Slab, when you say you can't make the carry, are you sure? Have you tried clubs other than the driver? You might find you have a better chance with a hybrid or 5 wood? I agree with changing to a two-piece distance ball that isn't going to spin too much in the wind, you might surprise yourself with a shorter club

Think I posted this in post #30 when you put this up but basically...So if you don't get over the first carry your are forced to lay up from the DZ and now hitting your forth shot over the 2nd carry towards the green & if you don't land it on the green then the ball is probably gone & you're now pitching on for shot 6 with a 2 putt being a good putting stat given the slope!

And yes its a par 4!

I like the sound of the challenge... put something different in front of the golfer and all sorts of thoughts run through your head instead of the usual fairway and you're guaranteed a few erratic shots being played.

I do like the notion of chipping to the ladies tee and then having a go.... BUT I don't think I could live with the ribbing ;)

thanks, yup, used driver, 3w, 5w & 22 hybrid at various times.
I need a plan as I have a biggish pairs comp there in 2 weeks and I don't know if they'll move the tee forward by then and I have a playing partner to consider

Then you'd love it, flower beds, lava rock, mangroves, architectural planting, water, water water & 100 yrd fairway bunkers!

Its definitely my fav out here (despite the 18th) and in fantastic condition at the moment

So from the tee the fairway is over 265yds,doesn't seem it's a high h/c course, the drop zone should be on the tee box side of the hole as the point of entry must be on that side, grow some and give it a go.
