How often do you have lessons?

Your my Idol Murg

Its what im trying to do....Iv nothing against anyone taking lessons or against teaching Pro's but i want to try go it alone.....

You must have some decent talent to be able to maintain a 5 handicap without lessons though.

Like I always tell Fragger - Form is temporary - Class is permanent!

I was having lessons five or six time a year over a couple of years. It did help my game but I reached a poit where I felt I was stagnating and I didn't see and progress despite working at the drills and practicing hard. Went to another pro, mainly for a change rather than anything. He introduced me to something called the Plane Truth system and got me swinging on one plane and since December it has re-invigorated my game.

I think if you ask anyone who has played with me since December (Bash, Sundance and Hwkeye in particular) they will say the ball striking and the shots are hugely improved. With the short game taking shape I feel I can really kick on again. HID got me 6 lessons for Chrimbo and to be honest I've had 4 and only two have been on the swing. I've had a bunker and chipping lesson as well. I know what I need to work on much more with the one plane and if it goes wrong why it is doing so. In my case I'm not blessed with natural talent and have had to work hard at my game and have regular tuition to achive what I have. It works for me and while it does I'll keep doing it

Going to book a series of 5 starting this week to sort a few posture and grip issues (pointed out to me via Bob and James (justone) ). .

What I said to you was just a quick fix to help you keep the ball in play for our round which was along the lines of don't aim down the middle and slice it out of play, aim down the left and slice it INTO play.

It's pretty much the same for Pokerjoke if he reads this... a quick fix for him is the same aim left and just hold off the release with his 'extra strong' right grip keeping his thumb back.... if he rolls his wrists at all the clubface will shut el pronto and he'll hook the heck out of it, although he doesn't cut the ball or leave the face open quite as much as you.... a quick fix for the day, real improvement requires more major surgery  Both of you however should probably stick with trying to hit a soft fade/soft push fade, especially with driver

I am another self taught golfer. Been a member for 2 years now and have recently seen a huge improvement in my game.

Someone posted back in august when I first joined this site that you should keep notes of the drills/swing thoughts you use.

Mine had become a bit of an essay, but I tried to add to it and never delete anything that was on there. Earlier this year when I was having a real bad time of it I went back to the start and read the whole thing. It was a scary insight into how much chopping and changing you get up to.

The good thing with this was there were quite alot of re-occuring faults and reminders e.g keep head steady etc.

Got ten Videos that I watch every few weeks, just to make sure I am not doing something stupid. Almost every time I think I wont find anything and will find 2 or 3 little things I had forgot.

If I hit a brick wall with this method, then I will try taking lessons.

I've had a couple over the last few years and I'm working on a few things. I find it hard to find time to practice, hence why I'm not getting much better, although on Friday a mate that hasn't seen me play for a few months thought I was a lot better...

Had a lot of lessons over the years and there is no doubt they really improved my game. I now have about a couple a year and they always result in improvements in my ball striking.

Agree though that lots of practice is also needed. Lessons are a good way of making sure you are practising the right things.

For those who want to go it alone my question is why? OK if you already play off 5 h/c maybe no so much but if you are playing above 10 or 12 and want to improve I can't really understand why you woudn't. For the sake of a few quid is it not worth finding out if there may be some things that could be changed which could make a significant improvement to your game?

How many Tour pros don't have a coach that they go to either regularly or when their game needs a bit of tweaking and these guys are already far better and know far more about how to hit a golf ball that we ever will.
