How Much Does The Wind Effect Your Performance

Just finished a round with Imurg at Aylesbury Park and its fair to say it was blowing a gale

Somehow I managed to play some reasonable golf and finished with 35 points including 3 blobs ( some 6 points in front of a certain chubby person ,..... but we wont mention it OK!!!

My driving was OK, my second shots were pretty good, chipping was OK, Putting was very good

I dont understand how I can play like that in those conditions, yet in more normal conditions, id be scraping to get 28 points

Playing again tomorrow with CVG and Imurg with £21 in the 2's pot, Hope I can carry the form over

I like playing in the wind. For some reason I tend to play well. It always tickles me to see a player pick a club out of the bag that would reach the green in normal conditions, then attempt hit it harder into a 3 club breeze. Or inversely, take the driver out of the bag when the wind is from behind, then quit on the shot because they're happy to let the wind do the work... Play with the conditions, not against them..
By the way, my nearest ever hole in 1 was playing a 160 yd par 3 with a 4 club wind from the left. I had to take a 3 iron and aim it about 100 yards left of the flag and then let rip.. all the time praying that the wind didn't drop. 3 inches from the hole....

Playing in the wind requires more concentration and thought about what you're doing.

On a normal day its easy to walk to the ball, clock the yardage, say that's a 7-iron and then pull the trigger.

On a windy day, you have to think more, assess the strength and direction and factor into club selection.

Of course you should take that care on any day, but we often don't.

However, I find it hard to keep concentration up for the round. I was hitting driver 3-wood into about five par 4s on Saturday and by the end was shattered mentally.

My theory is that we will all at somepoint play well and when that happens, you will score pretty well whatever the conditions. The biggest issue I find playing in the wind is comitting to my club selection.

Youre assuming that it went were I aimed it.. Trust me, having seen my swing on TV for the first time last week, there is very little chance of that..

It was an interesting day and the Golfing Gods were certainly shining on the Old Bugger!!
I didn't play badly but Fragger played well - although we won't mention playing the wrong ball on the 1st shall we -- Oh sorry......
The thing that happened today for Fragger was that when he either went offline or was blown offline his ball was rarely in trouble and had a reasonable lie. He was able to recover and use his shots to score some decent points. This is the sort of luck that you need to score well in conditions like we had today. He had 7 x 3 pointers including 5 pars - many of them I made par as well but without the shots he was always going to take a lead.

On another day (tomorrow) those offline shots are going to be behind trees and in deep rough and that's where the score starts to mount.......

I like playing in the wind and my scores tend to reflect that (2 under h'cap yesterday - not as blowy as today though). I think expectations are lower to hit a score but also it encourages me to try punchy shots and my coach says that they're when I strike the ball better (he's right)! I also think my head is less burdened with technical swing thoughts...

Is this not starting to overlap the thread from a couple of days ago about having lessons on learning to picture the shot you are about to play and thinking about what you are doing. A few people scoffed and said just get on with it and hit it, stop over thinking your shot. When playing in stinking conditions like you have been you think a lot more about what you are about to do, compared to a nice hot summer day when the there's not a breath of wind.

it certainly test your shot shaping abilities.

Plus to accept certain aspects of the game you cannot overcome.

And a quite Timothy! hot putter also helps.

I don't mind the wind when I am swinging well. I seem to play better as I don't let it get to me but my mates all moan and play worse. I don't mind wind or rain just not both at the same time

I generate too much spin with my Driver meaning with the wind it goes miles and into the wind it gets blown all over the place (slow down or hit 3 wood you wally!!!!)The main challenge is gauging the wind strength to then choose the right club. But I'll be honest I'll always score better on a calm day

I think a lot of time you subconsciously relax thinking the elements will give you a good kicking and so swing within yourself and at a better tempo. Of course if you are the recipient of good breaks too and a hot putter then anything is possible. My prediction is that it will be a fleeting victory and normal Imurg service will be resumed tomorrow - 3-5 point margin
