How many shots would you expect to take from inside 100 yards

An interesting stat I read. If you get up and down from 120 yards and in, half the time, you will play to single figures. I tried it when I was off 18. Had 16 chances, converted one and played to my handicap. Another 7 converted as per the stat and I would have played to 11, so not far off correct and I probably had at least one hole where I thrashed around in the rough and wasted a couple of shots.
50 from the OP is pretty good, 4 better than 3 per hole which equates to one on the green and 2 putts. I accept that on a number of holes he will be aiming to hit the green from more than 100 yards, so this stat will only include putts if he managed to hit the green, but as his sig says he is off 18 he would be expected to miss most GIRs.
Its a good stat and a good illustration of where your shots go.

3 would be the hope, and I'd be confident of doing it quite often. if not 3, then I'd take 4 more often than 2.

Just looking at my GAME Golf stats and inside 100 yards I'm hitting the green 70% of the time, so I'm giving myself a chance at a 2, but most likely looking at a 3 70% of the time.

Looking at my last full round on GAME Golf, inside 100 I went:

3, 4, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 2, 2, 3, 3

So averaged 3. Not bad. I'd take that.

Wouldn't have any expectations for that distance or any other - that's adding pressure for no good reason. I practice hard to get up and down by knowing the distances I hit my wedges, using different clubs to achieve different distances and flights and then practicing putting from 15ft in to convert them. No idea what my conversion rates are from that distance, for me it's all about enjoying the challenge for a shot that requires skill and ingenuity - probably my favourite type of shot/distance.

Is the correct answer.

I don't keep stats, I play for fun, but I would be surprised if anything from 100 yards to 30 yards that I average any lower than 3.

Certainly standing on the fairway or light rough, if someone offered me a 3 from 50 to 100 yards, I would just take it and mark my score down if I was scoring.

Once my target becomes the flag it's three or better, it's less a distance thing and more what my target is.

Prior to that my target might be a point that isn't the flag.

With further reading of then posts it appears my total wasn't that bad after all. First time I had recorded this, so will be interesting to see on next few medals how I do.

I wasn't recording the data to have any expectations or to try and beat it each time out. I have been having quite a few lessons over the last year or so and I needed a way of assessing how my short game was performing. My pro has said a couple of times recently if he saw my full shot swing for the first time and I told him I was off 6 or 7 and not 18 he would have immediately asked what's your short game like !!
So I have had some short game lessons as well and it was good to see that in this round anyway, it might not be too bad. As it happened my driving and long irons let me down on the day or it could have been a sub 70 score, but hey ho there's always the next medal lol

Yes I'd take a 3 all day long. If I'm lucky I'll knock a 2 in but would definitely mark a 3 down and walk to the next hole from 100 yards out.

Sounds like you're well on your way there! Sod the odd setback, invest your practice time wisely and you'll make significant progress:thup:

Cheers. The last four range sessions have consisted of me putting markers out at 20 30 40 yards and hitting 7 iron and wedges to those distances. Having the practice range we have at Gaile, which is all grass and amazing, really helps your practice.

That looks tremendous!! Make that place your friend... Sure I can see single figures looming in the distance ;)

It's great to have access to it, it's only 5 minutes from the house. What you can't see from the photo is the chipping green with the white flag has three or four bunkers around it as well.

During the winter the club sorted the end of the practice area by levelling and returfing 1500sq metres worth, just about to come in to use in the next month or so with practice tee furniture as well.
Balls will be provided when this opens reducing the need to walk down and collect your own balls - that will just make me lazy :D
