How many balls?

When I first got specialist wedges I done 200 balls, 50 with each wedge. My hands were bloody raw

Blimey Oddsocks, thats dedication - personally hitting 50 lob wedges in a row at a range would bore me to tears - I like walloping the big dog :D :D

We had markers ranging from 10 yards to 100 yards, I would play 2 shots to the 10 yard net with each so I got used to being versatile and changing lifts etc, then swap to next market and same again.

Me and a mate would also play a ten ball pitch match to a net about 30 yards away that was about 15ft in diameter. Loser gave the other one a fiver, that makes you concentrate harder

I usually hit around 120, last time out I hit 200

I goto the range in between lessons and as I am starting out I am trying to hone my swing and practice the drills the pro has given me, so a lot of the shots are not full swing

when using wedges and short irons (which is most of my range work at the mo) I am in the process of getting my distances right for full, 3/4 and half swing shots

Have been down the range 4 or 5 times a week while the course was closed owing to the weather, will be 2 or 3 times now that we are back playing. Usually get 2 buckets of 100, only ever hit 5 or 6 with the driver, maybe 20 with fairway woods, 100 or so full shots with irons and the rest with wedges and 7 iron itting to different targets under 100 yards.

Yep! that was 800 to 1000 balls a week!

Determined to get this new swing grooved!

Have to honest and say i don't go to the rang much. I've been once in the last 3 months and that was only cos of the snow. Not a great exp either, frozen balls off a frozen mat with blades... ouch. :o

£3.00 for 50 ( Don't think there were, only looked like 40)

Prefer to go to a practice ground and us your own balls off grass.

Interesting reading guys. Bloody hell some of you hit a lot of balls. At the moment I'm bedding in swing changes so only take 5 clubs (3 wood, hybrid, long iron, mid iron, short iron). It's more mental fatigue that gets me. Pre shot routine plus drill rehearsal I find draining especially when you are hitting balls in succession.

Hit 10 with each iron really well (even the 3i) then got to the hybrid and started getting lazy with preparation and snatchy with the swing.

Hate hitting wedges at the range prefer doing that on our practice hole off grass.

At the range I only hit about 40-50. I warm up with a few easy pitch shots with wedge then hit a couple of dozen or so with my six iron. I try to take my time and make each shot matter. I like to see if I can hit three really good ones in row. Puts a bit of pressure on the third strike which is good. Then warm down with a few manufactured shots (half shots etc to specific targets) then a few chips to finish.

Sometimes I'm just looking to find a nice rhythm or generally groove the swing others I might be working on somthing specific, e.g. after a lesson.

If I want to hit driver or practice my short game I do it on the practice ground with my own balls.

I used to hit 100 balls at least every time I went to the range. Now I take a bit more time over each shot and usually hit about 50. If my brother in law is with me we may split an additional bucket of 50 so I end up hitting 75.

I get 100 balls - £3.80 .

50 with driver, 50 with 6 iron.

Usually takes about 25 mins, then I'm off home.

i used to be like this and found no benifit at all. the only time i drill more than 10 balls with the same club is if im working on a drill specific for fixing a fault.

Clearly I'm over-doing it! Normally I'd take 200 - 300 balls depending on which range I go to (£6 a 100 at one, £3 at another!).

I tend to split it into 1/3rds. The 1st third I'll warm up with pitching to start and then work my way through the clubs.

The 2nd third will be my focus third where I'll work specifically on whatever my weakness was on my last round.

What I tend to do as well is leave clubs at home that I don't want to be distracted by. On the range - especially if you're having a bad time of it - it's so tempting to pull out the driver for example and smash the hell out of some balls, so I'll often leave the driver at home so I'm not distracted. Sometimes I'll only take 1 or 2 clubs with me in fact.

The final 3rd will be target practice where I'll alternate clubs and try to pick up left/right targets on the range. I find that with the range it's almost impossible for me to gauge distances correctly (especially at night when it's floodlit) so I focus more on getting the line right than distance.

To be honest, I don't find 200 - 300 balls to be 'too much'. By the end of it I'll start getting tired, but only for the last 25 balls or so. I actually quite like having an evening to myself, blocking out two hours and leaving my other half to enjoy an evening of relaxation on her own (I'm sure she likes it too!).

Aye, a lot of people say that, but everyone's different, each to their own and all that. I do find it beneficial, especially if I've not played for a little bit, in honing the swing again. Hit a few, see what happens, if they're fading or whatever, revise things until the draw is there. Hit about 20 more and try and match that, then start deliberately playing for fades, low straight ones, and obviously draws.

That said, I much prefer being on the course - there's no substitute. A few hours annual leave this avo, so I'm straight out there for some much needed prep for tomorrow's winter league.

AWOOGA

usually 90 but on wednesday's the range has a deal £10 all you can hit plus a share of the pros time.
I did a couple of buckets (200+) over an hour and and half(?) - was I aching afterward!

Around 200 but i do go up for 2 hours or so! generally 50 warm up. 100 technique eg what i'm working on. 25 with pre shot routine. 25 pitches and just mixing it up.

I get 100 balls and work my way from small chips with the wedge through to the full driver smash. This way I get a gradual build up on effort and guarantees I'm warmed up properly before really going for it

I've been known to go back and get another 100 between me and a friend but that is a rarity.

Went to the range today. Got a bucket with 75 balls. Got tired after about 40 balls. In the future I'm just getting 45 balls. So how many balls do you get?

I hit 40 (approx, as the machine likes to say) but intersperse with lots of reps/drills.

However, years ago, 100 was normal, sometimes 200.

No idea, I use my own practice balls and work on what I need to and so spend between 2-3 hours with breaks & ball collection included.

I agree with that. I tend to take either a tube of 20 balls or a small practice bag with 40-50 in on the practice ground and take my time hitting them going through my pre-shot routine and then letting my mind think of anything but golf as I go and picke them up again
