First full 18 on Wednesday (let's hope it's not raining...)

My playing partner reckons that playing an unknown course as a beginner golfer means expecting to lose about 10 balls in the round.

Is that reasonable? (if so, it pushes the cost of a round up considerably!!)

10 seems very high to me, I would hope no more than 3.
You could well find a number of playable balls whilst looking for any wayward balls of your own.

Dont listen to him.....He's obviously wayward......I never attack a new course i always play them conservatively......You have to feel your way round.......If he is the same handicap as you make a small wager with him the next time ye play a new track.....50p for every ball lost goes to the playing partner.....Lets see how many he thinks you'll lose then. :D

I used to play a course where the rough was upyour knees - if its like that then 10 - or if its wide open with no water and not many OOB then 3 would do.

Where are you playing?

3 sounds about right to me as well. If I lost 5 I'd be miffed!

Playing at Hinksey Heights, Oxford. Some nasty rough (no more than I'd expect) and one beastly hole with two lakes etc.

I played Hinksey Heights tonight and lost one ball and found 3 so if you do that then you could go as far as to say it lowers the cost of the round. They have cut the rought a fair bit since last week so shouldn't lose too many.

I lost 5 last week in one round but I was hitting 3 off each tee so I am sure I just forgot where they landed.

Good luck

Mate of mine lost four balls off the tee in the same patch off rough which was no more than 50 yards from the tee.

He wasn't happy... It was very funny :D

I would have spent so much time laughing at him and then probably messed my own shot up and got it to the ladies tee.

It's the same rule as if you wait for someone to get off the hole in front of you then you shank it and if you think "I won't get it that far" you then hit it better than you ever have done before.
