How many 3 pointers?

Played with a guy on Sunday in our stableford comp who has 6 x 3pts and 1 x 4pts within the first 7 holes of the round.....22 points after 7 holes! He finished the round with 28 points of which 4 of those were on one hole. Wheels well and truly came off......

He only had 38 and 31 so had a lot of blobs and 1 pointers also.

Sounds like his HCP seems to be not too far off, then.

Generall I'd guess, the higher the handicap, the higher the number of 3 pointers (offset be an also higher number of blobs or one pointers).

I recently played a 9 hole round and brought home a +8 gross. If you look at the individual scores, I played 4 of the holes in 9 over and the remaining 5 holes in 1 under. I think in a stableford comp, I wouldn't have had a single hole with 2 points on my card...

Spot on I would say he only hits a drive 150 but he is straight and putts quite well.

Average round of golf for me - would end up 32pts s/ford. And that would likely include a couple of blobs and maybe 3 of single pointers. So that would mean three three pointers assuming rest are 2 pointers

i average 7 pars + 0.4 birdies a round. i reckon that i play about half* of these on shot holes so that sums up to 3.7

*shot holes are usually more difficult but ata ratio of 11:7 i think this is a good guess

I didn't have ANY three pointers this morning. All my pars came on holes where I don't get a shot. However no blobs either. Scored 31 points, so not too bad!

He sounds like me! I am hideously inconsistent! I play off 28. Last weekend I had 6 pars! I scored 38 points however I had a gross score of 101. Drives me insane. I've parred or birdied almost every hole on our course. I just don't appear able to put it altogether in one go :-) I feel your friends pain!

How many would I EXPECT to get?

Off my 8 handicap I'd EXPECT to par 4 of the holes where I get a shot.... namely indexes 5,4,8 and 6

This thread is absolute gobbledygook to me. Of the 52 qualifiers we play from April to October, only one is a stableford comp - all the others are medals.

its usually the first weekend in August, when i'm usually on holiday, so i rarely play it.

I'm genuinely surprised at how many on this thread talk about points at holes like its 'normal'...

Stablefords ARE normal South of Hadrian's Wall! :)

I average between 1 and 2 birdies a round, and would probably expect to par 2 or 3 of my shot holes, so anywhere from 3-5 3 pointers per round at a guess. I've no idea what my best is in reality.

I'm a good "steady Eddie" to partner an up and down type of card. :)

I think the lower players, who have reached something of a plateau will mostly be getting 2 pointers, with the odd 1 & 3 pointers.
Those who are slightly higher, and/or on the way down will be more 1 & 3 pointers.

Sounds boringly familiar.

Because stableford scoring hides a lot of rubbish golf and makes rounds seem better than they might actually have been?

At least in Stablefords you can't wreck an otherwise good round by having one disasterous or unlucky hole, and the fact that you don't have to complete every hole at all costs speeds up play. :)

that last sentence is a bit different to one of your recent posts delc.
if memory serves you put a ten on the card whilst playing stbfd.

As a baseline target, as many as the number of strokes I am receiving with a couple of others tacked on for gross birdies on a good day.

More than 5 would be really unusual.

I probably could have got a 9 if I had been a bit more careful with the penultimate putt, but I was past caring by then and rushed it! The 10th shot was just a 6" tap in btw. I have seen hackers take 15 in medals, and that really is painfully slow! :(
