Hi all,

Recently my Pro has changed my swing plane as i was far too steep, but as expected the new swing plane is really alien to me and my swing feels horrible and awkward.

How long does it usually take for swing changes to feel "normal?"

Cheers.

I don't think there's a "usual". It depends on the change. I'm trying to make a change at the moment and keep trying to make the new swing in slow motion (without a club) whenever I can. Just trying to groove the new moves.

I believe rule of thumb is 10,000 balls or reps to ingrain something into muscle memory

of course thats the scientific theory, real world is varied from person to person and also how big the changes are

So let's say 5000 balls/reps are needed on average..
At 100 balls per range session and one session per week that equates to almost a year.....
Wonder why I've never tried to change mine.....

One hour short game lesson on Wed, 90 minute practice yesterday - first chip today on par 4, 1st hole -sculled it out back came off with a 5 !

Im nearly 3 months in from my first lesson.....Iv only had 4 with some great advice also from Bob.... It getting more and more comfortable by the week....I too changed my swing plane which apparently is the hardest change to make....When i started out i told my Pro that i didnt care if it took 12 months to do it...I was going to stick at it until i changed it.....But the initial sign of my good stikes are very promising......

Stick with the change and stay patient...Even through the really bad rounds and bad strikes.....And i always try and take a positive from my round regardless of what it might be...There will always be at least one.

I tend to have two or three range sessions after a lesson to work on the drills and feel like I've a degree of trust. If its a huge change then I try and avoid a competitive round but play in roll ups and see how it fares on the course. If I am struggling I tend to send a video to the pro and he'll give me some pointers or help

Great advice :)

I had a series of lessons to change my setup and swing after the season finished last year, although I am comfortable with the changes, I still have to think about what I am doing every shot, so its not natural yet.

I don't think there is such a thing as natural. You still have to think about stuff even if you just walk up and hit it.

I think you can make a change in just a couple of swings, if you WANT to.

10,000 balls to bed something in sounds like it's being confused with 10,000 HOURS to master a skill.

Interesting. My old swing felt 'natural' to me. A swing that was so wrong in so many ways (I now have a before and after video that I'll post up when I manage to edit it). It was easy, natural, not many thoughts. The results were...random.

Now, I have a new swing, more thoughts, more checks, less natural/easy.

Perhaps we're confusing a natural action or feeling with something that is easy to do?

Years ;(
It doesn't happen over night I'm afraid

I think it depends on how long you've had the part of the swing that you're trying to change.

I've heard it said before that it will take a pro x thousand balls to bed a change in, but isn't that because they have to reprogram the swing that has hit many more balls than that?

I can't answer from experience because I always start tinkering with something else before the current swing has bedded in. :o
