Okay Gents, heres a wee question for you all. How long does a sandwedge last before you replace it. I'm talking about the wear on the face here and the effect that has on the club to ball contact.

I use the sandwedge for many different types of shot around the green and for bunker shots obviously. It is also an ideal club for practice outside in the back garden, so it gets a lot of use. I have recently retired a Vokey 56° 13°. To be truthfull it probably should have gone a year ago.

It was ony in use for 3 seasons.

How do long you use a club before it NEEDs replacement.

Well I've had mine for 10 years

It was part of my X12 irons, and when I replaced them with the big bertha's they never came with a sand wedge so thats why I've had it so long. In the new year it will be replaced (long overdue I must say) with some specilaty wedges a 52 and a 56 maybe the TM zip wedge's.

I can see why your asking though, I would imagine with a couple of years use, especially in the bunkers would take the sharpness off the groves and make them less effective.

Lets hope when I get my new wedges, they make me a better player around the greens.

This question can't be answered in terms of time, but in terms of how much use it has had. If you bought a new sand-wedge 20 years ago, and left it in your locker, it would still be as good as the day you bought it.

Just look at the face and compare it to a new one. If it's worn and shows signs of the grooves flattening, then it needs replacing. They also suffer from physical damage to the leading edge more that other clubs do, through encountering stones hidden in bunkers etc.

The answer is when it doesn't give you the spin you need. It can be 20 years old, but if it spins the ball the way you want and you can get up and down from around the green then there's no "time" to change.

Harrington does it before every big comp!

I do it whenever I have some cash to blow, or get some new sticks about once a year.

If you like your wedge and\or don't want to keep spending money on new wedges you can invest in a groove sharpener.

That way you can just sharpen the grooves back to how they used to be and the wedge is just like new.

The only thing to be careful of if you do this, is not to overdo it and make the grooves illegal.

I would say about 18 months with heavy use,my 56 gets hammered i had 4 grips on it in just over a year,i will change it when/if the greens firm up a little in the summer,i dont really like brand new wedges they rip up balls too much it,normally i go the range and hit a load of balls just to take a bit of the harshness off

Mines' about 12 y.o. Only about 5 years of playing mind you.

I scrape the grooves every now and again (with a metal bradawl) and use a light sandpaper on the whole surface to remove the rust. I don't like the rust, regardless of whether it helps spin!!

It was a quality forged Mizuno (TP) to start with though.

If you play and practice a lot then your wedges will need replacing more frequently. If you practice a couple of times a week then every other season should be fine (unless you have spare cash to spend). Lots of golfers replace their wedges every season to make sure that the grooves stay sharp. I find that if you clean your clubs after use and use a groove cleaner during the round they tend to last longer.

I have 4 wedges in my bag and I get a new set at the start of each season and again at the height of summer when the greens firm up and I need to spin the ball more.

Nice to see a response from someone who can really play.

Feel free to post here as this is the best forum around.

All the best with your aspirations this coming year. Maybe have to keep an eye open just to see how you progress.

Nice web site by the way.

Out of curiosity Sebastian, are you still paying for your gear or are Titleist supplying it?

On closer inspection.....can I change my answer?

I've just looked at my SW and I think 12 years is too long!!

I think I will search for a matching 56 and 52 ASAP and stick the year-old TM 52 up for sale.
