I mean how far do you hit it you dirty buggers. Just that i was wondering as i don't seem to hit my irons far at all. I play off roughly 27, been playing for just over a year or so, i'm quite short around about 5ft 7 but i'd consider myself a pretty athletic build. I seem to be able to drive the ball a fair distance roughly around the 230-250yards but i can only hit a 7 iron about 130ish where as other people i play against who i nearly always outdrive can hit a 7 iron a good 30 yards further.

So is it just me thats seems to have this problem or does anyone else on here have it?

And yes i know it's always not about how far you can hit it but i just feel like i should be hitting my irons further than i do.

ok cue the willy waving :D

Swing smooth and know your yardages, really doesnt matter how far its how many as you say.

For what it's worth and to answer your question, I reckon on 155 yard carry for my 7 iron in the summer, as the weather is cooling off and the ground softening I am now taking a club more for the same distance.

Playing off 15, I am usually about 10 yards behind most 12 or better hdcp golfers, I play with a lot around that level and I do out drive them on occasion, I hit 2-3 more fairways a round than them but my current shoddy iron and wood play means they putt for birdie and I putt for par most holes.

It is strange as I hardly practice my driving, currently I struggle to get my irons in the air and my fairway woods are horrific, thankfully I know the cause and I just need to get to the range to do the drills.

I think i feel alot more confident with my driving hence i swing at nearly my maximum all the time where as my irons i lack confidence and don't really commit to the shot as much that could also be the reason i don't really hit them that far. Maybe i need to start having a extra wheetabix on the morning! :)

If you have to hit a 6 iron when everyone else is hitting a 7 or an 8 but you still put it on the green then there's nothing more to say.

Distance is relative. Distance is only any good if it's accurate distance

Aye i understand what you meen it shouldn't matter aslong as i'm still hitting the green but it just seemed to be a a real lack of distance in my iron shots considering i seem to drive the ball quite far compared to other people i play with.

Agree with it not mattering if you're accurate with it, but I wouldn't say your 7 iron distance corresponds to your driver distance.

Are they both carry distances or with roll?

I had a quite a few lessons with a local pga pro and one of my faults was that i used to fan the clubface open on takeaway and used to struggle to get it back to square at impact and that used to cause a weak left to right ball flight but i've pretty much fixed this. Aint had a lesson for a good few months so it might be a good idea to go back and have a few more and see what he thinks about it.

And maybe i just need to get over my length issues :D

perhaps some stretching exercises will help with your height, dont know about your 7 iron though! :D :D

doesnt matter how far its the score that counts

Yeah they are both carry distances. Thats what kind of baffles me and people i play with, i nearly always outdrive them unless i hit a bad tee shot but they are always hitting atleast a club or 2 less with there irons.

I agree. Distance is not everything, but the difference would worry me.

I suspect you are not hitting your irons very well if you can drive this sort of distance.

Lesson time I reckon.

Just looked in your sig, wondering if you have old clubs that there might be something wrong with, and noticed you have PX 4.5 shafts in them.

Maybe someone who knows more about shafts could comment, but I thought 4.5 was on the soft side of regular, and your driver carry distance would mean a swing speed (with driver) of around 100mph.

Could too soft a shaft mean loss of distance?

Do your iron shots go very high?

Your five foot seven? well I wish, I'm five foot nothing I hit my 7iron 140 max on a good day drive 230 again on a good day. I've played to single figure's just and now play to eleven at times? Had a great game at Sandiway last Friday four over gross. It's not how far you hit them it's what you do with the distance that counts.

So many people leave the faces open on their irons in effect making a 7 iron like a 9 iron.

My mate is a PGA Pro and he said it is one of the most common things people do.

At the end of the day, it doesnt matter what club you take aslong as you get there.

I can hit the ball a fair way, but, I would rather hit it at 80% and be on the fairway than blast it and be shouting fore-right.

Bozza, if you have a video camera, is it possible to film your iron swing, upload it to youtube and post a link here.
There's lots of knowledge in here
