How long are you......

No sure distance really matters that much.

I’ve played with and against some low handicapers this year and distance has not been an issue for any of them. Was up against a guy off 3 (2.6) this year in the club match play semi final. I drove the ball miles past him off the tee, was hitting 8 iron from 150 when he was hitting a 5/6 Iron. Made no difference, he didn’t miss a green. When he could not reach in two, he laid up so he had a good shot at the pin, chipped to a foot and tapped in for par.

Short game, short game , short game, is what important for good scoring

My irons are only about 6 months old, so they should be fine but yeah my iron shots do seem to go quite high come to think of it.

I will try to film my swing over the weekend and upload it to here to see if anyone can notice any faults that could be causing lack of distance.

As other peeps have posted, don't worry about which club your partners are hitting.

For me its the complete opposite. I hit my irons a good distance and never have that reassurance that I'm hitting the right club into a green as Im often 2-3 clubs shorter than my playing partners.

about 230-235 with my old club but now 250-260 with my ping g10. 6 iron I hit 150 yards and 7 iron about 130-140 (varies a lot for some reason)I find if i turn my left shoulder past the ball on the back swing i get more distance and also tend to follow through a lot better and keeping it straighter

I'm about 230-240 carry with my driver and about 160-170 carry with my 7i. :D

I have quite a quick swing, but it's mostly under control. I'm 6ft1 and have quite long arms so it's just my natural swing speed, I don't try to swing hard.

I've tried slowing it down but I actually get less accurate as the tempo, timing and balance feels all off to me.

I agree accuracy is more important than distance. But obviously if you can maintain accuracy and increase distance you'll have an advantage as you'll be coming into greens with higher lofted clubs which should give you more control and accuracy.

For the OP - dude if you are playing off 27 and hitting the ball 250 yrds off the tee (in the UK) the rest of your game must be honking ;) Best advice anyone can give you - is get yourself over to a pro and book some lessons, not 1, not 2 but 6 or 8 over the winter and get something to work on. My old man is 65 and plays off 14 and he will barely hit it 200 yrds with a driver on a good day.

Based on Sundays game driver carry was around 265, 7i carry was around 150. I'm trying to click with s new grip at the moment so trying to concentrate on a smooth easy swing with good tempo. Without trying to smash it to death Sunday I equalled my personal best of 80 gross on a par 71 so maybe this new easy swing is the way forward

I think your 7 iron might be broke :D

Indeed, in the summer I was carrying an 8 iron about 155 but this new weaker grip has killed my iron distance. Only plus side is it's lowering the scores. So I guess it's a pick between ten yards of my iron game or 6 shots off my score card ;)

Only one winner there - the 10 yards of course :D ;)

265 pitch with a driver - thats TV golf mate, you should be playing at the Timberlake event!

I didn't mean the 7 iron distance was short, just that it doesn't seem right compared to the driver carry.
Do you use different grips or swings for them?

jjf69, this was an approximate carry based on my caddie pro app on the iphone, im playing again tomorrow so will use the shot tracker from to so the finishing place and get an exact distance on 2 or 3 drives. im taking the 265 yardage as a pitching yardage as this was up a very shallow uphil with pretty soft ground so would have stopped up pretty much instantly. I did have a few monster drives over the summer but im putting alot of them down to long runs from hard ground.

Region. im not sure what the crack is with the difference in power output so to speak between my irons and woods, but i totally agree that my driving always seems longer than average with my irons what i would only say is about average. The driver is the burner 09, and i will say the shaft is massive compared with my old ping g2 460, id say aroun 1.75"-2" different, maybe this would exaplin it.

i need to use the shot tracker a bit more to get some really accurate distances, a prime example would be my vokey 52*, on the driving range with low quality balls it 100yards on the button, yet on the course with a range of different balls as i have already treid this, 80 seems an absolute max. I tested this with DX3's, Prov1's, PTS Solo's, TM Burner Reds. all 80 yards max.

What is interesting is on the shaft length thing with tm, my vokey 52* has the standard shaft, and my TM Z 60* has the standard shaft, yet the 60* wedge from TM is about 1" longer. So do TM get their distances from shaft length only.

Oh and homer, the ten yards more isnt what wins the money at the end of the day, short and straight my man, there is less danger that way.

if thats all it adds i can see why people are cutting shafts down. My old Calloway Great Big Berta II was a bullet straight club and so easy to control, the newer TM seems about 2.5 inches longer and can sometimes be wild. Wheres that hack-saw...........

You "only" hit your 7 iron 140? My question has to be, does it really matter?

It's far more important in the first instance to know how far you hit each club, and then select the right one for your approaches.

I have a mate who plays off 6 who hits his 7 iron up to 170 yards, but he really de-lofts his clubs at address. He is able to work with that extra distance by selecting the right club rather than worrying about distance, and that should be everyone's mantra.

I wouldn't say the rest of my game is stinking it's just that when i hit a bad shot i hit a really bad shot most of the time. I never just seem to play a steady round of golf, i play some absolute blinding shots and play like i should be playing off alot less than my handicap then i'll go an take something stupid like a 7 on short easy par 3 and loose my rag to easy and mess up the next couple of holes. I admit i have abit of a short temper and loose it too easy on the golf course and that tends to cost me shots aswell.

I took around a dozen lessons last winter off a pga professional and he fixed alot of things for me but then over summer i only went for 2 lessons and i had picked up other bad habits, but over this winter i'm going to go for alot more lessons and really work on it for next year.
