Hi guys, off to play Carnoustie soon and really looking forward to playing it again however a Greenkeeper pal of mine tells me he was there a few weeks back and tells me they had put huge 1 inch deep holes into the greens then dressed over (trying to get the greens to be firmer he reckoned) and they were bloody awful to play on and was to say the least mighty pissed off at this spoiling his trip,he said they really were awful.Have any of the local guys up there anything to report, have they recovered now or am I goin to be disappointed and how is the rest of the course?I know it is reduced green fees but wasnt expecting to play a building site. :D

Hi dodger I'm no Einstien but i would just do the simple thing and give Carnoustie a quick ring to find out the state of play with regard to the putting surfaces.

Also as a greenkeeper of many many years experience myself I would'nt dare to criticise a fellow professional when he is only carrying out essential course work in the winter months(John Philp was'nt given his MBE for crap greens you know !), and as Carnoustie has some of the finest putting surfaces in the world I would'nt think surface quality would be compromised to a great extent.

It is nice to see that they have reduced the green fee rate, but if you really want to try it at its best dig deep and get booked in for June. :p

Dodger,

If indeed Carnoustie's greens are less than perfect at the moment, due to winter dressing, you have two excellant alternative courses right next door - Panmure & Monifieth (both Open qualifying courses).

a friend of mine is a member at monifieth and I agree it was an excellent challenge of golf, really enjoyed it. As for Carnoustie, if it wasnt difficult enough then these green problems could make it almost unplayable especially with the wind we've had recently. played 2 summers ago, +1 teeing off at the 15th, finished 9 over and pretty gobsmacked to say the least!
