On Saturday my mate, off 16, shot 76 for a net -8. He got cut to 13.4, which was what we thought it would be when we were working it out (8 x 0.3 = 2.4 cut when he was on 15.8).

However on howdidido today it shows he got cut an additional shot to 12.4. I can't work out what that was for? His previous two comp rounds were 91 and 93 in the club champs, both well over handicap. Before that was 87, 89, 96, none of them were particularly low. Are there any other reasons you'd get an additional shot cut?

He might have had -4 or better going back a bit further and this was ESR. If it was, he should be notified in some way.

You would have to look at his last 10 scores to rule out an ESR having been applied.
If an ESR, or other general play adjustment have been applied then he will be advised (the committee are required to advise him) what it was.
He will also be able to access his handicap record and it should show the code on there to

What's ESR?

His last cut was back in January, but yes that was within his last 10 rounds. He shot 80 playing off 17 and got cut to 15. So is that the explanation then, two major cuts in your last 10 rounds and you get another shot cut?

I think you have it here.... a net 63 followed by -6 clearly points to an ESR (Exceptional Score Reduction) of 1 shot, though has been mentioned by others, he should have been informed about that part separately. Well done to him, he's obviously a rapidly improving player.

What's ESR?
Exceptional Scoring Reduction (ESR)
An Exceptional Scoring Reduction (ESR) is a reduction in a player’s Exact Handicap that is applied over and above the decrease applied by the UHS when certain patterns of scoring are triggered by a combination of both the level and frequency of scores. ESRs are calculated in accordance with the provisions of Clause 23(c) and are applied by Affiliated Clubs at the discretion of each Union.

23.10 At the discretion of the Union, Handicap Committees must, following submission of two low Qualifying Scores (Nett Differential of -4 or better), by a Member, within a calendar year apply an Exceptional Scoring Reduction which. will further decrease a player’s handicap, over and above any handicap decreases already applied by the UHS.

Thanks. Yeah, ESR is what it was. And it's two rounds within a calendar year rather than within 10 rounds as suggested earlier? His previous one was in January so just made it in. (y)

On Hdid look out for little stars next to the new handicap on the comp results list. Doesn't the signify that esr was used or in play.

The reason 10 rounds was mentioned is that if there are 10 or more QRs between the 2 scores - and the average of the 2 is -6 or less - then the ESR is zero.
