Have decided to take the plunge and join a club ....

Sent five emails Monday through their membership enquiry pages

Two clubs came back the same day and emailed me membership packs, prices and info and have already followed up

Three others haven't even replied yet

Is it just me thinking that's rude?

Or maybe you could phone them and actually speak to them - they maybe haven't got your email or the membership Sec is on holiday etc.

I take your point about the holiday Phil, but how difficult is it to stick an auto reply on the inbox; the membership secretary is on holiday/the office is only manned on Xxxdays, we will get back to you by…… And if they have a membership e-mail, it's surely not unreasonable for people to use it rather than phoning?

I guess it all depends on if the person is a paid employee ( should have Out Of Office on ) or in our case is a volunteer and the email goes to a personal email box. Whenever I have a question to a club i always feel more comfortable phoning - get a sense of the reactions from the way they are on the phone.

a lot of the people who deal with this area are volunteers so don't work full time at the club .

unfortunatly you don't get instant answers from some clubs .

if you think that's rude you better start getting used to it.

Why don't you go and ask in person this is a better way for you to see them and them to see you.

Most clubs have proposer and seconder rules it's easier for them to explain this face to face rather than in an email.

Probably not rude, just incompetent. I'd cross them off my list. My previous club were like this, then they folded.

What five courses have you contacted.

When you think clubs are meant to be struggling you would think they would be looking at every chance to bring in new members

Not all courses are actively seeking members, your always best to phone as emails can be easily overlooked especially if the person is in a voluntary position and has alot in their inbox or they haven't had time to check etc. Surely you would just phone?

I'd email, not phone. It's the modern way. Clubs either catch up or miss out. They need to reply quickly as well or the same happens, they miss out. Once I have the info then I'd go and look closer at the best options.

I doubt they are being rude, just poor at what they do.

^^This^^ Taking our Club for example our Sec only works 2 1/2 days a week, try ringing on the other days you get an answer phone.

I don't think any club is being rude, just give them at least a week.

Maybe it's me then but in the current climate I would have thought somebody would answer - even with a 'get in touch soon'

I might be expecting too much - but the annual fees for these five clubs range from £1500 to £2500 plus joining fees!!

Each to they're own and all that but personally I'd always phone and speak to someone in person. I think you will get a much better idea of the club by actually speaking to a person, also if you email I doubt they would be taken as seriously as a phone call.

Current climate ? Not all clubs are struggling for members and the prices you mention appear to more the higher end clubs so will possibly not be actively looking for members

Which clubs are they ?

Which clubs and what climate? Some are doing OK especially in Surrey and perhaps they don't feel the need to respond instantly

I think my ratio of emails to phone calls at work is somewhere between 15-20 / 1. Email is how people communicate now. Clubs need to move with the times and acknowledge this. If they don't then they will be missing out on members, green fees, visiting parties etc.

My kids think texting is old hat, as for phoning and speaking to someone, ha ha.

Emailing is a pretty impersonal way to express interest in something, i'm 26 and even I would phone to express interest or arrange a visit. Not everybody works in an office. Im self employed and always find it better and prefer if the customer phones me first to arrange work or ask for a price. If they emailed or text it probably wouldn't be top of my to do list, I'd always see the person who phones in front of them

I would be wary as stated by some......may just be inefficient but that could mean other aspects of the club is shoddy also. When ever I have enquired at a new club about membership I have been welcomed with open arms and received a warm welcome, so if I was ever in that situation again, and din't get the same response I would probably look elsewhere.

Run by volunteers...yes......but charging hefty fees so the service should reflect that.

If they neglect e-mails then suspect they don't have an active and informative website either which, for many of us, is a necessity in this day and age.

But visiting all five when I am not sure what the joining packages are etc? After I have that info and I am interested then yes but otherwise this is a request for info
