I'm posting to share and hopefully to encourage if/when I get it sorted.

I've been working on takeaway, swing plane and holding the lag into the swing. Hitting it very well with occasional bad shots but thats to be expected for a WIP.

Then.....last night went out and you'd think I'd never played before or was off 28 (no offense to high handicappers),
Thins, shanks, more shanks, duffs and more thins on every shot, and I mean every shot.
Confidence was high going to the clubs range, after hitting I was so fed up I walked away leaving all my practice balls. Went home and kicked the dog (not literally) then at midnight watched a few myTPI videos which were very encouraging, so back out tonight before I put the clubs up for sale:whistle:

Man, this game can kick you in the teeth just as you think your about to crack it.

What clubs have you got and how much do you want for them? :).

I'm sure you'll get it buddy, like you say its a WIP.

had a dose of the shanks that lasted two weeks about two months ago. it puts your head in a dark place golf wise! club sales, the lot! there is light at the other end. played some of my best golf after that!

It happens and I know only too well. Last night however I experienced something I'd not had before. Played 9-holes after work with a mate and the first 5 holes saw me in the cabbage losing 6-balls and playing really, really badly. I was almost walking off. The 6th which is a tough par 4, which I'm happy bogeying, saw me par it. Left scratching my head. The 7th which is a short 310 par 4 saw me hit the pin from the tee (Wind assisted) for a tap in eagle. Holes 8 & 9 were both birdies with some stunning shots. How can that happen, playing like a window licker one minute and then like Sevvy

I look at the other way round. There are so many things that need to happen in the right order in a golf swing that I find it a miracle that anyone ever gets the club to hit the ball let alone in a straight line. I am surprised at the good shots more than the bad.

I had a bout of the unmentionables recently, right up until my last round on Sunday just gone. Before that I been hitting at least 3 a round, had seen my handicap creep up 0.1 in to many consecutive comps to mention and on the range last week, half a bucket of El Hosel's lead me to giving the remainder of the balls to the young lad in the adjacent bay.

Then last Saturday when at work in the morning and not all that busy was trawling through golf digest and saw something on Stack & Tilt, their top 6 tips to it or something. Some made sense and thought to myself why the hell not give the tips a go on Sunday, after so many Ham Shanks in the prior week’s thought it can't hurt. Went out Sunday played the best I have in months, drives straight and true, irons sweet as a nut including the final hole 4 iron over a bunker to 2 feet for birdie. Managed 39points and 2nd in the swindle, not done that all year.

Since that went and bought the Plummer and Bennett book, been down the range twice this week and hit the ball beautifully. Club Champ final this Sunday anything about handicap will do me whilst I look at changes that S&T can be inbuilt into my game, and even looking for an S&T coach in the south east of England..

Funny old game...

Shame on you!! You have more talent than gumption! How canyou walk away when you are having an issue? You must know enough about the golfswing and your golf swing to work it through and go home happy.

I was the same as gary. Had a real issue with the shanks, after I'd got rid of them I played really well. Shot a +4 to get cut 3.6 shots in one go.
I've now got them back slightly, but I'm more aware of why it happens for myself.
Keep your head in it, get on the practice range and take your time. Go back to basics. Works for me.

At the start of the season I went through a patch where I thought I'd be in the 70's every round no matter how I played.
Now I feel like I'm never going to break 80 again.

No-one knows your swing like you do. For me I'd start with alignment and grip, then tempo. I'm awful(er) when I get too quick at the top.

Not sure what handicap has to do with it, i know very, very good golfers and i'm talking + who occ play like a 28 handicappers .

I reg have a few spells of shermans and when it gets you destroys your game, Bomber will recall his round with me at Blairgowrie earlier this year whe i could't hit a iron after the 6th hole.

As they say a bad day on the golf course is always better than a day at home with the wife!!!!

At least with other ball sports almost everyone of them the player is trying to hit a moving ball, we have the pleasure of trying to hit it whilst motionless.

for what its worth, I had a relapse earlier this year and had a great tip from my pro.
Place a box, plank of wood or practice ball tube 2 incles from your ball pointing the same direction you wish to hit the ball, if you hit the guide then you are too in to out. You (well, I) needed to practice and drill this in and now dont shank it. I do cut the occasional shot now as I have gone slightly the other way but I can live with that until I have the swing ingrained.

Darth.

I went for 9 holes last night but there were no T times available however the pro was free so I booked driver a lesson. I've never had a full back swing and although I hit the ball well, I am a bit flat.

The driver lesson never happened and we concentrated on take away and wrist break in addition to staying on plane.

It was hard work but the full swing is there and I am willing to work at it. My new take away feels totally alien and requires a lot of work but the general swing is much better although my execution and ball striking will need some work until I've built my new swing.

The changes are not big changes but anything that changes takeway and swing plane generally need a lot of time and work.

I have no doubt this weekend and those following will see me racking up a bingo card scores and becoming very frustrated.

sorry - but I can't read past the word s**** and I do wish it wasn't used and I didn't find myself reading it. Really does my head in. Use is banned (informally) in our clubhouse and most certainly on the golf course.

we have a member at Tain called Billy Shanks, would he not be allowed to join your club then?

20 years ago one of my mate's was a 2 h'capper, and a damn good one too. 15yrs ago he got the shanks, and last year gave up the game at the tender age of 62 having risen to a handicap of 23 - and playing nowhere near it. I've seen him miss a green by a few yards, leaving a bunker to chip over, and use a putter to knock it round the bunker. I've also seen him take 4 shots to get on the green from a similar position.

It was very sad to watch someone who had been a fantastic golfer struggle every time he pulled an iron out of the bag.

Now - tut - that word still being mentioned. Went out for a few holes this evening and just back - had to walk in after teeing off on the 13th - TWO of the bl***y things. It's the hole I do it if I do it. So I stood there on the tee and thought about it - and did it. So DESIST - pleeeeze...:-(

Shanks, shermons, the unmentionables are only but words.

Yes - OK of course they are - shermons, the unmentionables - and I'll add 'lucy locket' even 'socket' and 'J Arthur Rank'. But hey - you might think it daft - but I thought the word was considered 'out of bounds' in the company of golfers - well it has in my experience. Ho hum.
