How does this happen to a single fig player

I look at the other way round. There are so many things that need to happen in the right order in a golf swing that I find it a miracle that anyone ever gets the club to hit the ball let alone in a straight line. I am surprised at the good shots more than the bad.

Here, here.

I remember hitting 50 shanks, thins, tops and fats on the practise ground at R St David's before a game. I'd driven 2 hours to get there and had a match booked. If I'd gone out like that, it would have been 100+ easy.

Went out and played the game of the season.

It's madness. That's why we like it (or not!)

O
I'm posting to share and hopefully to encourage if/when I get it sorted.

I've been working on takeaway, swing plane and holding the lag into the swing. Hitting it very well with occasional bad shots but thats to be expected for a WIP.

Then.....last night went out and you'd think I'd never played before or was off 28 (no offense to high handicappers),
Thins, shanks, more shanks, duffs and more thins on every shot, and I mean every shot.
Confidence was high going to the clubs range, after hitting I was so fed up I walked away leaving all my practice balls. Went home and kicked the dog (not literally) then at midnight watched a few myTPI videos which were very encouraging, so back out tonight before I put the clubs up for sale:whistle:

Man, this game can kick you in the teeth just as you think your about to crack it.

You have me puzzled with the header, single fig golfer when your Sig say target 9 only 4.4 to go????

Anyway yes it can happen to any level of golfer but can disappear just as quick as it came, my motto is a bad day of golf is better than a good day in the office.....

i prefer my motto!

It was very sad to watch someone who had been a fantastic golfer struggle every time he pulled an iron out of the bag.

Oi! Leave me out of this! :-)

Shot a solid 55 on the front 9 today, ball was on a string..... just not MY string. I think that's 20 over par for the front 9 LOLOL

I've had better days!!! LMAO! :-)

Dear God.....

Did you play it twice James? LOL.....

A more respectable 6 over on the back 9 to stay under 100 :-) LOL

Just didn't have a game with me, toe shanked my approach on the 2nd & 3rd (OOB) and it was downhill from there, had no feel whatsoever and felt so shattered, just had nothing in my legs. Hopefully will shoot under par next time out!!! LOL

I'm really questioning my fitness now though, how can a 43yr old (handsome) stud-muffin feel so knackered after just 9 holes? ;-)

Felt like I was standing too upright (to protect my back?) which would explain the toe shanks, just couldn't do anything about it though whilst I was out there as I just couldn't get comfy.

Oooh, been there. I did front 9 somewhere in the 60s one time. That was a long round. Think I finished it, went straight to the car, got home and then it hit me and I just sat there stunned thinking "How in the heck did that happen? I can't be THAT bad at this game, surely"

EDIT: I was wrong, just looked up my scorecard. 24th June - 71 front nine, 62 back nine. Fortunately I've made some progress since then, last round was 99 and improving all the time.

I had the same issue recently. I was having hour long coaching sessions each week and refining things well. Then Exactly the same happened to me. Thins, Fats , Shanks. I was so confused. My pro was too as everytime we finished a session i was on point. But everytime I come back I was all over the place. What was causing it was doing drills from magazines that were to fix issues that didn't even exist in my swing. Along with swinging clubs around the house I was making the issue worst. The more I was thinking about the bad shots the more I was putting pressure on myself and falling apart.

The moral of the story goes...

Bad practice makes bad Perfect.

And If its not broke dont fix it.

I've ironed out my issues and accept that out on course I might hit the occasional poor shot. I'm not so eager to analyse why now, instead I just move on and don't think about it. I only work on what a Pro shows me to do and id suggest you see a Pro to get back on track.

Medic! MEDIC!

He's off his meds again, and delusional...

This happens to me every few weeks on the range :(.

One day I'll be nailing absolutely everything. Next day I'll go up at lunchtime to hit 50 balls to try to keep it going and I'll literally stand there with no clue what I'm doing. It honesty feels like I've never played before. Everything feels wrong, grip, stance, posture etc etc. And I know from past experience for me unless I hit 100-200 balls it's not going away. So most of the time I'll hit 20 then leave the rest.

I'll show up at the range the next day and everything is fine again. Go figure.

Thankfully that's only happened a couple of times on the course. But really gets to you when it does.

I have one story on this, played with a guy and a girl from work at a par 30 local 9 holer. They shot 56 and 63 (something around there), pretty good going when they are both new to golf and the girl only carries a 7 iron and a putter.

Its a poor quality place, I can usually go round in about 6-10 over, mainly due to the poor greens (both slopey and unkept)

That day I shot 66, lots 5 balls and did not get a single par! Only a few weeks before I had come second in the club champs nett and I back at my club I shot an 82 off the whites in a casual knock the following weekend!

just been a bit mischievous, the winking smiley I thought might show what I meant, it can read two ways:whistle:

too much going on in the head Darth , you geting in your own way, knowledge overload complicating the basics ??? just a thought

probably bang on Blade, saw the pro and he had me moving my ball position back and trying to turn better with commitment to compress the ball, he had me hitting well on the range, only hit 4 shanks in a tough medal today. Just need to get back to basics

toe shanked my approach on the 2nd & 3rd (OOB)

which would explain the toe shanks, .

whats a Toe shank? shanks are hosel bred, do you mean you nearly missed it and the toe caught it (in to out) sending it weakly to the right?

Indeed.... close to an airshot..... nearly missed the toe altogether, just caught the tip, went about 40 yrds.... bizarre shot actually as you can hardly feel it off the clubface so you might think it actually came off the hosel. I don't know if this shot actually has another name other than toe shank....? It's what I've always known it as.... not that I've ever done it before of course!! </big-fat-lie!>
