How do you know if you are using the right ball?

So, I have been using the Taylormade TPx for the last season. Never seemed to get along with Titleist and I felt, with my long game, TPx would be the best choice. I have however noticed that my short game never seems to react the way I would want. When I want the ball to run out it seems to die and when I want it to pitch and stop it runs forever. Putting seems inconsistent too and I don't seem to have the feel I would want.

So, in the hope that it isn't that my short game is completely hopeless, I am going to try out some Taylormade tour preferred's that I have tonight, am I right in thinking these should spin more and be a little shorter? Does anyone have any experience in changing about between these two balls?

Or should I be looking for less spin?

Any advice would be great! Or ball recommendations from anyone who has come across these problems. Really considering the Vice balls for a trial too.

Sorry, its your short game :o

However when choosing ball its best to work for the green back. Short game performance over tee to green performance.

The issue IMO is at the top end of the club as opposed to the ball

You can try a new ball but I doubt it would make much difference

I knew it would be the short game! Live in hope though!

Any idea of your swing speed? The Bridgestone balls are good as they have two bands for swing speed. I use the B300 RXS as its for swing speeds under 105 MPH but really soft round the greens. The RX is less soft but a little longer and so on.

I've been playing the Callaway hex Chrome+ for the last 12 months or so and found it excellent.

Tried a Z-Star (.... Courtesy of Fundy) and was amazed how much better the short game control was.

The Z-Star isn't as long as the Cally ball, but not massively shorter, but the Z-Star is definitely better, IMHO, when it comes to short game.

The only real difference between the two is the number of layers (4 vs 3). TPx is a 4 piece ball like the Callaway. Z-Star is 3 piece.

Z-Star is definitely softer feeling as compared to the Hex Chrome+ and reacts much better around greens.

Just my opinion of course.

I think when I last got measured for swing speed it was around 115.

I will see if I can come across one of these.

Balls really do make a big difference.
I've tried more balls this year than ever, I thought I'd settled on the Titleist NXT tour S but then tried the Taylormade project @ and they are by far the best ball for me. Stupid long with irons and woods but have good bight into greens.
