How difficult is your 1st hole??????

I'm currently a member at too many clubs for threads like this...... :o

At Liberton, it's the easiest hole on the course. Not much over 400 yards, downhill, par 5 with the widest fairway on the course. Drive and a mid or short iron is all that's required. Only problem is everything runs to the back of the green so it's hard to attack a pin at the front with your second shot. Par 4 for the guys toughens it up a bit but still a gentle introduction.

At Craigielaw it's an interesting short risk and reward par 4. About 270 yards from the reds and correspondingly short for the men so the temptation is always there to try drive it, especially with the prevailing wind helping, but the narrow, elevated green and severe bunkering can leave a really nasty second shot if you miss it. Sensible play is a 5 or 3 wood over the fairway bunkers to leave a pitch up the length of the green.

At Duddingston it's a regulation par 5, about 470 (I think) from the reds, not hugely longer for the guys, with an awkward ditch right and bunkering left around driver distance. I always fancy it's reachable with a good drive and good 3 wood but have never actually managed it. Maybe now I'm a member it might happen. There's not too much trouble around the green though so no real problem going for it with the second shot. A real birdie chance but not the gift that the first at Liberton provides.

Ours is a par 5 about 510/520 I think.

Not too long but very deep bunkers all down the hole and around the green. Rough and mounds left and right also, worse on the right. Not a hugely appetizing shot if you're going at it in 2 with pot bunkers around the green and bushes left and right of those.

If you play it as a 3 shot par 5 it should be a par at worst.

I tend to make a right balls of it in comps!

Centurion is a relatively easy starting hole imo.Mill Ride (last actual club) has the ideal starting hole imo. Relatively short Par 5 that allows big-hitters who have warmed up a chance of Eagle and let those whose war-up is a stretch and a couple of putts to get away with pretty wayward first hit and still make par. Wide-ish fairway, little danger right and most of the 'challenge' being on or around the green.

The Shire, however, has what is reputed to be the hardest opening hole in Europe! 150-160 yd Par 3 should be simple, but green is only 19 yds and there's water on 3 sides! Make sure you are warmed up properly! And get the allowance for the ever-present breeze right too!

To my mind any par 4 at over 500yards with a dog leg around 300 to a bunkered green is tough, each to his own tho'

Our first is a 400 yards par 4 that typically plays into the wind, so the second shot can be anything from a short/mid iron to hybrid/wood.

There's a 150 yards forced carry (100 yards over water) off the tee, which shouldn't be too difficult but is just enough to get into your head when you haven't warmed up or your swing is off.

There's a large bunker down the hole right side of the green, that especially comes into play when the wind is blowing and you have a tendency to slice your longer clubs.

Definitely one of the tougher holes on the course...

Just over 400yds with OOB 380 of them along the right hand side. Nice open fairway though to help gather a drive but your second shot needs to negotiate large oaks. Need to be brave and flirt with the right hand side to allow a better line to the green as you'll be safe, but shut out going left. SI 8 as I think..

Might be the easiest hole on our course... Big wide par 5 @ about 495

might be?

one of the easiest holes you'll ever come across, par 5 490ish prevailing wind usually helps. Oh and if the fairway isnt wide enough then you can hit it right and be on the 9th too.

in summer ive been on in 2 with as little as hybrid wedge!!!

No great danger as such but a good drive is needed to find the fairway or you'll be blocked out by trees, par 4 392 yards.

SI 9 but looking at stats from this years medals it has been toughest hole on one occasion and averaging around 5 th toughest .

Really tough and a great hole to have lots of experience on for the county competitions in the summer. Par 5, dog leg right, big pond and 3 deep bunkers in range off the tee and another pond left, you can carry the water but you have to hit one of your Sunday best to do it so 99.9% of people hit a 3 wood or hybrid up to the corner and aim left to avoid the water. From then on it's a relatively straight forward hole, couple of 7 irons to get you there with only a large grass mound about 120 out from the green, over that of short of that with your second shot leaves you a simple shot into a pretty large green with bunkers either side, anything long is dead.

It's the tee shot that scares the crap out of every person. Stick it in the drink off the tee and you're dropping 2, playing 3 from 300 yards out and having to take the dreaded water on again....the amount of people I have seen take a drop and duff another into the water....including myself once or twice!

First on Rosemount is a tough right to left dogleg at 447 yards SI 10, first on Lansdowne is a relatively easy pat 5 at 490 yards SI 12.
Both are tree lined fairways with heather down either side and well placed bunkers so pays to be straight.

438 yards par 4 off the medal tees, playing uphill and into a prevailing wind more often than not. OOB left and ditch right - both of which are in play off the tee. SI 5 and most handicappers will take a 5, breathe a deep sigh of relief and move on all day long. For the first digs of competition days it's an absolute brute.

Of all the the courses that I play regularly it is undoubtedly the toughest 1st hole of them all.

Oh for a benign 350 yard par 4!!!

Yep it's a par four really - gone into the green with a wedge a number of times. Disappointing if you get a par

Ours is a tricky 420 par four - prob the widest fairway on the course put bunkers to catch out wide shots and a small green

As others have already pointed out, our course off the Silvers is a relatively straightforward par 5 at around 475 yards.........but.......take the tee back 20 yards and turn it into a par 4 off the blacks and it is definitely no walk in the park.

Dog leg right to left with bunkers guarding the right hand side and anywhere left blocked out, even a 300 yard drive will leave you 200 ish to a green, heavily guarded by bunkers front, left and right.

Throw in a long narrow 2 tiered green and trees down both sides pretty much the length of the hole and you'll do well to witness any pars here off the blacks.

Here is the view of the landing area if you're lucky enough to miss the trees and the bunkers.
One of my favourite holes when it's off the blacks.

Difficult.

582 yard par 5, often into the wind, OB all down the right with two ponds to negotiate.

Usually plays hardest on the course averaging 2 over par and in comps maybe 7% of people par it and the very occasional birdie, which is unusual for a par 5!

Our 1st is approx. 465 yards SI3, it ALWAYS is the hardest (highest scoring avge) hole in comps, I have been playing it for 25 years and birdied it 3 times (2 chip ins). Aside from Centurion off the blacks its the hardest opening hole I have played.

I was thinking how hard the first was at knebworth. It's b***y horrible.

Ours is a nice downhill par 5 with a gentle left to right dogleg. Eagle opportunity for averagely long hitters in the summer, and even I feel bad if I don't get a par at least.

It played the 4th easiest in the last comp, which sounds about right (although it's si 10)

I've played the Shire twice, once as a 3ball and once as a 4ball. 6 pars and 1 birdie between us.

Difficult? :ears:
