Homer Jacked

Bear in mind that The Belfry meet isn't confined to the forum, there will be hardcopy users too. Chances are this could be a GM rather than Forum article, possibly with a staff photographer.

et moi aussi. Homer puts in a lot of work.

If anyone is 'sore' at being under-represented there are a variety of platforms where you can makes views known: - the forum itself, reports in the mag (partly mediated by Homer, but like he says more or less voluntarily)and the GM blogs. You can also write to the mag letters page with a match/meet report or if you have a point to make(just email Mike).

BTW - there was a big spread in thE mag on the first ever forum meet - at St. Andrews

Hmm - that's enough from me - please note I take no money from GM towers either, although have had a few sets of golf balls for blog and mag contributions - (sadly very few balls now left - better start writing again?)

I agree that Homer puts in a huge amount of work for little recompense and should be thanked for doing so. At the end of the day there are now more and more forum meets and limited space in the magazine so the coice is a simple one between not mentioning all of the meets or reducing the space dedicated to each one. I for one would rather that everyone got a mention rather than picking and choosing between those to include.

A question for MikeH though, how have the forum pages been received by the general readership, especially those that do not come on here. Are they finding it interesting or something they skip through as not being significant to them? I know I go straight to those pages to see who is in but would be interested to hear how non forum members react to them.

Let's not over-state the effort here, eh? It's a double-page spread. He's not exactly translating Voltaire into Arabic.

Yes, it's voluntary and good for that but let's not kid ourselves that it's not also an enormous ego trip too. And if he didn't do it, someone else would - 'tis the nature of the beast.

Fair play to him if he's got the time and inclination to do it. But don't get on the stage if you can't take a bit of criticism.

For what it's worth, I felt the NE v NW meet was decidedly undercooked for a big meet but there you are. I was there, so I don't need to 'read all abaaht it', but I guess other forum users who couldn't make it would have liked to see a bit more...or maybe not. You'll never please everyone.

On the other hand, I do find it a bit odd how much some forum users seem to think they can dictate the contents of a magazine. We should count ourselves lucky we get any influence or engagement at all.

As I'm not going to the Belfry (an appoitment with a surgeons scapel or whatever they use these day) but GM are covering the event in my absence and as I understand it will be duely covered (with pics) but I'm not sure if it will be a separate feature or not.

At the end of the day guys (and ladies) yes it is voluntary and yes it is nice to see my work in print, but like others have said its not that big a deal and others would do it in my place anyway. What does matter though is I can't produce ANYTHING unless you post it here, the other sections or mail it directly to golfmonthlyforum@yahoo.co.uk

This is particularly so for forum meets and reviews (courses or kit). If you arrange a friendly game with other forum members at least post it on here to let me know (and don't forget a camera).

As it stands, I have people helping me cover the Scottish meet on August 9th and we of course have the Belfry meet on the 18th/19th although I'm not sure if that will be covered in another part of the mag. As you can see the page is blank so its up to you to help fill it. It's your forum and I just try and facilitate as much as I can

I got 140 points! That alone deserves the whole two pages dedicated to me in a miscellany of different poses. I wore trousers, I didnt carry a rescue club for two rounds and I certainly didnt push any putts in.

Homer does a grand job, keep up the good work fella.

Homer asked about pics from the Scottish meeting but I couldnt attend. Homer is a wee bit like a referee in football, he takes a lot of flak but being hinest if he didnt do his bit n the mag would 'WE' the forum get any mention. Give the big guy a break lads !!!!!!!!!!

Hi all,
I saw this thread late on Friday afternoon but just want to post now as I speak for all the guys (and girl) at GM Towers.

Homer does a fantastic job covering all things 'forum' in his pages. His diligence is unquestioned and I can think of no better man to be given the task of representing the masses.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions and that's what makes this forum so great and respected. I'm not on here to point out what is right or wrong, but Homer was spot on with his comments.

Hope you all have a great week!
Alex

In my defence,we were asked to do a 200 word approx review of the day after speaking to the author who spent some time on this ,he was not amused to find that what he sent was cut to ribbons .
I think some one posted that to cover the two meets and leave the Longest Day Challenge for the next issue (a worthy cause as my father had bowl cancer)but low and behold there's 3 there, i dont no or care if he's on an ego trip or not but its disappointing IMO.
IMO a course review of a muni in sheffield didn't really need to be there and the space given to Homer and HTL for there act of charity.
Yes ,this forum is for everybody and everyone has there own thoughts and ideas and not everyone will agree on what is posted ,but when someone puts in some hard work to see it cut can be a bit disheartning.
IMO a line should be put under this and we move on.
Hope everyone enjoys Letham Grange for the next meet.

From my perspective I only put in what I'm told and within the word constraints I'm given. I understand the frustration particularly from the guy who spent a lot of time writing what was a very good piece. In hindsight it would have been better to have held the Scottish meet or the NE v NW report over but like I've explained before Mike Harris specificallly asked for a piece on the Longest Day AFTER I had already submitted a longer piece on both games. In my defence the original piece I did on both the Scottish dat and the NE/NW match were longer and did both more justice but were cut further to meet Mike's requirements.

With regards to the Sheffield muni, there would have been a review of some description in that section of that length anyway be it a course review (first time a course had been featured) or a piece of kit from the review section of the forum so that space was allocated regardless.

Homer I feel what was published is more than ample. As a member of the forum I do find it interesting reading about the different meets and the banter that goes along as I can put a 'face' on who each report is about. However, while Mike and the GM team do give a lot of credit and magazine space to the forum I am sure not every other reader wants to hear a blow by blow account of each meet.
Keep up the good job Homer!

I've only been here a while, but looking at the other mag, everyone her should be so pleased that the magazine allows so much space for the forum in general. I have not seen other magazines do this at all.
Keep up the good work everyone.
