Holidays 2025

For something different, go for NYE. We went a number of years ago and they have a spectacular firework display. Because of the shape of the bay, with mountains around, and also using boats they have a 360* display and it lasts a lot longer than the displays in London.
We didn't have a car so can't comment on the driving, but we did a levada walk to a waterfall which was amazing (if a little scary in some parts - long drop to one side!). Locals were friendly and food was amazing.
...yes - we heard of that display and I can easy imagine how spectacular it would be given the topography of the mountains surrounding Funchal and Funchal Bay. I''ll add that you can take a day trip to the nearby island of Porto Santo - and that has a fabulous long sandy beach - if little else.

Has anyone been on a city break to Istanbul? We are looking at a couple of days away in early Dec for my birthday and Mrs S has suggested Istanbul. Looks like it could be interesting, and food should be good but wondered if anyone on here has any experience.

2 days left for us before we fly back home, had a great time so we’re looking at a cheeky week away in March. Has anyone been to Cape Verde and if so which hotels would you recommend?
We’ve really enjoyed doing absolutely nada here in Mexico so a quiet ish hotel won’t phase us at all 👍

Istanbul is a great place to go, went 2 years ago and loved it

The traffic is bonkers, so you want to find a hotel near the old city.
We went to the Antea Palace hotel, which is a 5 minute walk from the Sultan Ahmet Square and from there, all the tourist stuff is an easy walk

Loads of things to see, PM me if you need more info 👍

She’s changed her mind, now looking at Berlin. By the time we get round to booking something it could have changed a couple of more times 😂

Sounds a bit like my plans for my 50th which coincided with leaving the RAF. We had 2 weeks in Mauritius booked, cancelled due to Covid. Thought we could get away for a week by the sea in Hastings, another lockdown! Ended up in the local pub with a substantial meal and a couple of pints

My lad went to watch City in the champions league final. He said Istanbul was an amaking City.

Any tips for Vienna? It's somewhere I really fancy.
Well, firstly, getting to the airport to the city is straightforward, taxi or train, both about the same for 2 people
if i went again, id take a taxi, unless your hotel is close to the station.
Id base yourself in the old town centre

Its spectacular, huge architecture, you have to do : St Stephans church (Cathedral) , a walking tour of the old city-3 hrs, Schonbrunn Palace & gardens, the Spanish Riding school performances on a Saturday & Sunday mornings are fabulous, not cheap, but get sold out very fast. The area around Michaelerplatz is stunning, lovely tea haus behind St Stephans cathedral, cat cafe (if thats your thing)

couple of restaurant recommendations,

Griechenbeisl ,( Greek Pub, but its not greek) about 5 mins walk north of St Stephans, oldest restaurant in the city, fabulous menu, try the pork roast for 2. stunning, ask to see the Mark Twain Room.

Zum weißen Rauchfangkehrer (Not going to try to pronounce it, but it relates as the "white Chimney Sweep" great atmosphere, great menu, not cheap, but you definitely get what you pay for

Consider doing a 2 centre trip and taking the train to Budapest, another great place to go (y)

Bloody hell that’s just sown a seed 🫣
That’s last sentence 🤔

Yes, 5 times to Boa Vista and stayed at the Riu Toureg. Have always done adults only, so you get pool just for those there and bar that stays open late as well.
It's very relaxing, and not a lot to do on that part of the island. The hotel is starting to look a little tired, and I am told it is being refurbed next year.
The beach the hotel is on is 7 miles long. Theres always a breeze but the sun is normally constant. The surf is normally quite strong, so if you do try going into the sea you do need to time your entry.
There is a beach further up the island that if memory serves me correct is longer than the one by the beach, and was rated as the 5th best beach in the World.
Next year we are going to Sal, which should be a little more connected but just as quiet :)

Hotel is closed next year until November having its refurb.

We got back what 2 weeks ago from there absolutely loved the places and definitely going back after the refurb. They’re building a golf course just up from it opening in 2027 so could be yet another reason to visit again.

I’m also tempted by Sal next year and playing the course out there as well.

Thanks mate, looking at the TUI app Sal is the only option for us flying from Newcastle. I’ve heard it’s very windy there but tbh I don’t mind that, cools you a little 👍

Its windy in Boa Vista as well, but TBH the wind takes the edge off the temperature which is needed.
We are going to what was the Tui Blue hotel on Sal next year, but they have, since we booked, told us its changed its name as its been "transferred". That doesn't bother us, it still looks nice :)
