This is a bit of follow on from the "are long par 3s unfair" thread but.....

If you had to choose one length for all the par 3's, par 4's and par 5's what would they be?

Mine would be:
Par 3 - 170 yards (requires at least a mid to long iron)
Par 4 - 370 yards (most drives are within the 220-250 range meaning they still require a good iron in. Big drives rewarded with a wedge to the green)
Par 5 - 500 yards (only the best drives are rewarded with a chance to go for the green in two)

Ps I know we all like a variety of lengths but humour me.

I'd say add a touch more on par 4's and 5's nearer 390/400 par 4's and 520 par 5's

Im with this thought

suits me too. long enough for a challenge and short enough that i can reach if im hitting well. you must remeber that when the wind blows all these holes can play significantly longer / shorter ! all part of the fun though isnt it?

Should vary i reckon . say 4 par 3 . 4 par 5 & rest are par 4 . (doh ya know what i mean).

There should be a shortish protected par 3.. 130ish , 2 around 160-170, & one around 185, you have to have all the shots ..
par 5 then should be a shortish one , a risk & reward mid distance one , a good tee shot giving you the option but a bad tee shot is punished .. then 2 around 530 , needs 2 very good shots to get home , trouble at the side but not at the front . but you do have the chances to attack them ..
par 4 need to be mixed & matched with lenght & hazzards ,

agree

nothing worse that ending up after the round only having hit (say) 4 irons at the par 3's, PW second shots to the par 4s etc

a good course will have you using a variety of different clubs off the tee, but still having a variety of different second shots etc challenging certainly, but enjoyable.

170 - mid iron
420 - driver mid iron
520 - driver, 3 wood, short iron or possible get on in 2 on a nice summers day

i really like my mid irons, not keen on par 4s that leave just a wedge, any decent par 4 has to be at least 350 imho

i am quite happy with the holes at Ellesmere, which give me chances but still all room for improvement.
Par 3s 104 to 191 mens (153-206)
Par 4s 311 to 366 mens (259-439)
Par 5s 383 to 478 mens (503-536)

The hole lengh is irrelevant I think. Its the mix of type of hoie that matters. I have played 450 yard par 5s that are unreachable in 2 due to the hazards etc that force a3 wood off the tee, a mid iron 2nd or a 200 yard + carry over water. A good course will make u play lots of diff shots. Nothing worse than a course where all the par 4s are driver wedge.
