So I am at a point where I miss my membership. I am barely playing any rounds and now I feel my swing is getting back to where it was if not better I really feel like taking the plunge back into membership.

I could rejoin my old club but its a PITA as its on an RAF camp so a ballache with passes etc and its only a 10 hole (1 has 2 greens) with 18 tee's. The good is its cheap (£400 a year) and usually empty but crap practice facilities and bunkers.

I have checked out others locally say 20 mile radius and tbh some of the prices are bordering on extortion!

Any gems around herts/beds/N essex I should check out with decent practice facilities, not corporate mad and at the same time reasonably priced?

anything over 1k a year to me is overpriced! (unless its RickG's gaff as you get the course and celeb factor lol)

Same place as me, Ive just got a new job and I eventually want membership. Course quality is going to be very high on my list.

I now work in waterbeach but live in Trumpington. I must go by (or near) something like 5 courses.

Meridian, Bourne, Menzies, Girton, Milton and Waterbeach.

Probably going to get a few paychecks under my belt (the usual 3 months probationary). Hopefully I can convert my good par 3 form into 18 holer form.

I agree under 1k is important, after my experience with malton I will put course quality pretty high. I used to put people way above course quality but as long as I can get a friendly game when I need it and people are not too snobby I will avoid poorly maintained courses, with the aid of a barge pole (ball retriever).

Quality pretty much narrows it down to Girton, Bourne, Meridian and Menzies.

yeah I got one month left of probation at new job and just forked out 3.5k on a season ticket for my travel!!! (that excludes bus and tube on top lol)

I work shifts so have weekdays off here and there and a late doesnt start till 1pm so could get 9 holes in each morning.

As you state course quality is important and for me good practice facilities especially short game as its something I really want to concentrate on.

I just got out of a shift work job, as has the wife. I was not so bothered but she wanted us to work similar hours. Thankfully that worked out. I found I was too tired to get much golf in when I was working 10-12 hours shifts.

Tube eh? sounds one long commute, at least its not by car :)

Barhill would be bottom of my list for the simple reason it's attached to a hotel and gets busy with golf breaks at weekends. Bourn has a driving range and better facilities IMO plus a par 3 you can use. Meridian lets you play Abbotsley but no range. All are under a grand.

nah commute is 20 mins to london and 11 mins on tube, I can do door to door in 50 mins on a good day.

I dont mind shifts as a) I get more wedge for it and b) i usually miss the rush hour on the trains :)

John O gaunt would be my choice over your way -

Which course were you a member of before ?

JoG is nice but a £1700 joining fee plus about £1000 per annum I think?

Chesfield Downs? Only played it once but it seemed a nice enough course and good practice facilities?

Yeah crazy joining fee at j o g. A lovely course though

I use the range at Aston paddy, its ok and very local but would prefer a proper club if you know what I mean and not sure if the practice facilities are upto what I want.

It tends to get mixed reports aswell and not sure on membership side as tends to be mostly pay and play. Am going there shortly to wwhack a few balls so will enquire but not on my list so far.

Panshanger in welwyn garden is £760 for 7 day or £575 for 5 day membership. Or there's trent park in barnet/Enfield at similar prices. If you fancy a round at Panshanger, I have a 2-fore1 to be used there before the end of August?

at the price point SB you have more options than Gibbo does believe me. If I was based where you are Id happily join Bourn, nice course, decent facilities, seemed a welcoming club and you also get reciprocals to 30 other clubs (incl Girton Royston and Brampton locally)

Not easy at the price point Gibbo, I expect the places you describe you want to be at are comfortably above the £1k price point

Is Letchworth under £1k or close enough to it to be a consideration?
