Kid2's thread earlier got me thinking about the sort of numbers I'd consider myself happy with hitting the green with different clubs.

I understand people play on greens of differing sizes, but just for fun, what's your handicap and how often would hitting greens from different distances make you happy at a minimum (out of 10)?

I'll start...

H/C - 8
> 200... 2/10
180-200 3/10
160-180 4/10
140-160 6/10
120-140 7/10
100-120 7/10
< 100... 8/10

Tricky one.
At the moment I'd be happy just to be around the green!
But on a decent day I'd take your numbers but maybe add 1 to each...

I am never, ever happy if I dont hit a green that is within range. Recently I have been a miserable so and so, as there is no guarantee that I will hit one from 30 yards, let alone more.

well im off 15.7 ( i have to get the .7 in...it makes me feel better:) )

I hit a 3 wood a few weeks ago clean out of the screws from 190 mtrs to an uphill 2 tier green over a lake thats protected by a tree on one side and i had a slight breeze into me.....
I was a mtr off the back of the green and i was like lucifer that i was off it....

The lad that was playing with me was off 2 and couldnt praise me enough for taking on the shot in the first place....And duely said that im far too hard on myself.....He said i should have been delighted to have put that ball where i did from that distance....But i wasnt :( go figure.....

I love hitting the green from our 150 mtr marker with a mid iron....But i think that if we miss its better at times for our short games....It keeps them sharp.....

I would expect similar scores to Region but....Am i being too optimistic and harsh off 16?

I probably miss the green from 100 mtrs just as much as i do from 200 which is not good.....

As a 9 capper, hitting 4 GIRs (total!) in the last 3 rounds leaves plenty of room for improvement!
8 pars and a birdie but still way below what I need. Got to overcome my protection of the ankle I broke 4 months ago.

Couldn't care as long as I focus and scramble well. Golf is not a game of perfect, remember that. Good title for a book that!

Proper hissy fit if i miss a green with a wedge

I suppose it also depends on whether you're just trying to hit the green or trying to get close to the flag.

I missed 2 greens with wedges today but both times the flag was near the edge of the green and I went after it. Finished about 15' from the hole both times but off the green.

Wow!

So where do you lose your shots to be off 16?

Mainly I'm a poor putter and have a poor short game, I won't be off 15.5 for long, had a poor 1st season at a new club and have been at 12 before and hope to get back at that level at least early in the season all going well.

If I don't hit the green from the fairway with an 8 iron or less I'm normally pretty disappointed.

It's important to be realistic in expectations when going for the green.
And as long as you don't bunker it or leave in the deep rough you have a chance to get up'n'down anyway.
Whilst I'm peeved to miss from 100, as long as I get down in 2 then I'm happy

According to SS2 off 13 I should be hitting 46% of fairways (or and average of 5.52 per round - call it 6/12 per round. Should it be that hard to hit one in every two? According to the stats my GIR figure for my handicap is 21% so that means just one in every 5 including par 3's. Again it shouldn't be that hard to do should it. Last year I managed just 45% of FIR (equivalent to a 14 handicapper) but did manage 25% of GIR (12 handicap standard).

In essence I guess these numbers show I'm about on target. That doesn't mean to say I'm happy. Of course if I wasn't in a short game rut and could convert some up and down chances then the scorecard itself would look rosier. This year I'm looking for a marked improvement all round

It's GIR that count. If you want to break 80 then you need to be hitting at least 6 then dont loose a ball, or three putt. Easy game Golf :smirk:

I genuinely dont get the 7/10 from 100-120 range. Having played with you you are so much better than me from this range yet im not happy with 9/10 from this range. We are talking full SW here, are you really only hitting 7/10?

The <100 should be better than 8/10 however I know mine is far worse currently so cant really criticise, that said, as good as you are surely you should be aiming at better than 8/10 here

From 120 upwards, they look pretty realistic to me

> 200... 1/10 - If I hit it once i'd be over the moon.
180-200 4/10 - This is a hit with 3 hybrid, should be hitting 3 greens from this distance.
160-180 3/10 - 4H & 5 iron distance, i'd be happy with the 3 from here.
140-160 4/10 - 6 - 8 iron distance, gotta take 4 from 10 and be satisfied.
120-140 5/10 - 8 & 9 iron distance, 5 would leave me smiling.
100-120 6/10 - 9 & PW from this distance, i'd want more than half on the green.
< 100... 6/10 - Creativity with PW/52* & 60* here - prefer hitting a full shot, but i'm learning to hit half shots etc with the 52*. Would be happy with just over half, although I wouldn't expect the shots that missed to be too far away at all....

....except for the one that gets thinned 60 yards through the back....

Looking at it on reflection, if I was stood at 150 yards, no wind - 7 iron in my hand, I reckon i'd be lucky to land 4 from 10 on the putting surface. I'd probably have 2 good strikes that dropped and stopped, 3 or 4 that are pushed right and finish 20 yards right of the target, 15 yards short. I imagine there'd be a couple of heavy strikes in there too, where the ball came to a rest about 10-20 yards short of the green, but on the target line.

Might find something else to do for 4 hours this weekend.... haha!

These are the sort of numbers I would be looking for and I'm another who gets extremely upset missing the green with a wedge!

Proper hissy fit if i miss a green with a wedge[/QUOTE]

Six and two three's in some cases. I sometimes beat myself up about missing the green, but more often than not, if I leave myself a 20 yard chip, then i'm happier with that, than I am with an 18 yard putt - I just feel there's more control over how far the ball is going to run out.
